Basic, clean & central.
We stayed 8 nights in May 08. Recently renovated, the hotel felt new. It's decorated with care and is very clean.
Located on the very central Gran Via street, near Plaza de Espana, a metro stop and many shops and restaurants. The buffet breakfast is served in an airy dining room, and includes fresh strawberries, cured Spanish ham and much more.
The use of an in-room safe was included in the price, internet cost extra. The Madrid Vision hop on hop off city tour bus has a stop near by, on Gran Via.
This is a basic hotel, it's decor is pleasant but without much flare, location central but not of a particular interest.

nice and convenient
we stayed 5 nites in this hotel, it was close to every part of the city we wanted to visit.
the royal palace, puerta del sol, cibeles, everything was in walking distance.
they are upgrading the hotel now, which means no sleep after 8 o'clock on weekdays, unless u are a really good sleeper :))
i have no idea about the other floors, but the 8th was very chic and new (although once i stopped at the 3rd floor with the elevator, it certainly was not a place i would want to stay).
overall: we enjoyed the stay very much :)
Unique Quality: it is actually close to every touristic spot.

My Stay at the Hotel
The hotel is being renovated, I was placed on one of the old rooms that had no hot water, but as soon as I complained I was moved to one of the fully renovated.
The Staff was very good and diligent in making sure we were happy.
Unique Quality: This hotel in on Grand Via Street, very close to "La Plaza de España" and if you manage to get a room over looking the Gran Via is really a great view.

It seems the sight seeing tours start from the above address. What is the best hotel/s to stay for easy transport (walking, taxi?) to this place?

Tryp Menfis, Mayorazgo and Emperador are the closest hotels to that point of Gran Via, just a few meters away. But anyway, there are many hotels in Gran Vía and from all of them you could easily go walking to that point, so just choose any which address is Gran Vía.
