Great Location!

Just got back from a two-week trip to Spain. Picked the Hotel Villa Real based upon its rank on tripadvisor.com. My wife and I stayed five nights and were not disappointed.
The staff was very friendly and attentive, and the rooms were decent-sized by European standards. We had a room with sunken seating area overlooking a small plaza.
Location was the most positive aspect, though. The Villa Real is a 5 minute walk from the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum, Plaza Santa Ana, and Puerta del Sol. It's about a ten-minute walk to Plaza Mayor.
We were a bit surprised to find out that the hotel does NOT have a pool or a gym. Various travel sites had indicated that the hotel had these amenities.
If you get tired of tapas and Spanish cuisine during your trip to Madrid, there is an Argentinean restaurant between the hotel and the Plaza Santa Ana. I believe it's called La Parillada. Good food and good service (unusual for Spain) at very reasonable prices- we ate there twice.
Have a great trip!

I stayed with my girlfriend at the Villa Real for 5 nights in late August this year. We were to stay at the Urban hotel but were transfered to the Villa Real since the Urban still was under construction. I must agree with all the praise the hotel have got on this page - great location, suberb breakfast and nice split level room. The only thing that wasn't top notch was the bathroom which was a little bit small and in need of a redecoration soon. A special plus for the sparkling wine we got the first night!

We stayed at the Villa Real in September 2004 for 2 nights. The location of the hotel is good and the breakfasts are lovely. But the rooms seem old, smelly and the staff does not speak or understand English. We had to be directed to the reception in order to order a meal from the room service, which did not speak any English. The hotel also lacks a concierge service which is a missing point for a 5 star. Might worth staying at only if you catch a bargain deal. I will definitely look for another hotel in my next Madrid stay.
Classy hotel

We had reservations for the four star Urban, but it was not open in time for our trip, but the Villa Real honored our reservation and price. The hotel was in a great location for walking to all the museums and to restaurants. The lobby is lovely and the service was classy.

Reserved this hotel on the basis of other reviewers and was not disappointed. Excellent rooms, big comfortable bed, good service, polite English- and French-speaking staff, and the location couldn't possibly have been better. Never had to take the metro, bus or taxis anywhere for sightseeing and nightlife. For €140/night (hotels.com) this is great value-for-money.
Furthermore, as a business traveller used to the sterility of Holiday Inns, Hiltons and Novotels, this hotel has that extra bit of character that allows me to give the maximum rating.
Highly recommended.
