Where to stay? What to do?

by MsLinzLou2

Where should I stay while in La Coruna? What should I do there? I will be there with my boyfriend for 2 days.

Take a day trip to Santa Marta de Ortigueira. (see my Santa Marta de Ortigueira page).

Best way to go is to take the Renfe to Ferrol, then the Feve to Ortigueira - but buy a one way ticket and take the bus back (the bus and train stations are close to each other). Reason is that the connection back to La Coruna is not convenient.

Unfortunately I stayed in La Coruna as a base to Santa Marta, but you may wish to stay close to the ocean/Ria. Notice it was pretty windy, not sure if this happens all the time. We stayed at the AC Hotel http://www.ac-hotels.com/main.asp. It was nice. They suggested a pretty good restaurant next door which had great waiters and awesome food. They brought us different wines to taste and explained about the Galician wines (Alvarino and Ribadeo).

It depends on your interests and travel arrangements. To answer the se unknowns, (for us) maybe the tourist web site will be of help to you.

It all depends on your interests, as pointed out earlier. Having two full days, I would definitely take one to visit the World Heritage city of Santiago de Compostela, just one hour away from Coruna by either train or coach. Santiago is not only one of the most beautiful cities anywhere in Spain, but also one of the best preserved. The historic core of town is just a wonder to walk around, with not a single modern building in sight.

Coruna is quite a pleasant port town actually. The area around the old harbour (now a yacht marina) is particularly lovely. I would try to stay around there, close to all the places of interest in town including the harmonious town hall square, the peaceful old town, and the quaint castle on the water, now a museum. The city’s beaches are also nearby. Only the famous lighthouse known as Hercules' Tower (allegedly the world's oldest lighthouse still in working order) is a bit farther away and best reached by public transport.

Ah, good point Eugene. I had made the assumption they had already been to Santiago.

Travel Tips for Coruña

The End of The World

by aquamarine_cf

Cabo Finisterre is a most westerly point of Spain, believed by ancient Romans to be the end of the world.
Cabo Finisterre and it s suroundings show amazingly beautifull landscapes. If you hike (I was too lazy so I used a car) you can climb hills or use uphill roads to see wonderfull sights that are impossible to forget.
There is also a beautifull lighthouse, and a seaside town of Fisterra where you can find very friendly people and great food.

Castille de San Anton.

On one walk along the east side of the City I passed the Old Castle or Fort, I wish now That I had visited the location, for a better view of the harbour entrance.

No doubt the Fort or Castle was a defensive fortification to prevent enemies from attacking the more vulnerable south side of the City.
