Albergue de Arzúa: shelter in Arzua

by jorgejuansanchez

Magnificent shelter constructed entirely with stone next door to the church Capilla de la Magdalena. It has two floors and excellent showers.
Do not miss the cheese from Arzua, t is delicious!
Be careful, they close the doors of the shelter at 9 PM!
At 8 PM I went out to buy cheese and arrived to the shelter at 9 PM and 5 minutes and it was already closed and all the pilgrims sleeping. I had to enter through the toilet window!

Albergue de la Xunta de Galicia: shelter in Lugo

by jorgejuansanchez

This is one of the very best shelters of the Camino de Santiago! It is owned by the Xunta de Galicia, or regional Government
It is situated inside the walls of this beautiful fortified city. The hospitalero (the person who takes care of the pilgrims) will help you a lot and will even wash your dirty clothes.
The dormitory is upstairs, on the first floor, where the light automatically turns off at 11 PM.

Monasterio de San Julian de Samos: sleping in a monastery

by jorgejuansanchez

You have two ways to continue your pilgrimage to Santiago when you reach Triacastela, in Galicia: the first and orthodox is shorter and in one day you can get to Sarria. But the second option, although is 10 kilometres longer, will take you to this lovely monastery where the accommodation is for free. You can assist to the mass together with the monks. If you do not have money they will invite you to dinner, otherwise there is a cheap restaurant just in front of the monastery.
According to the tradition, it was founded by Saint Martin Dumiense in the VI century.

Hotel Convento San Benito - La Guarda: Really lovely setting

by nhcram

As we just turned up and asked for a room we probably got the worst one they had. Take a look at the website! Ours was pokey and old. The bathroom was clean but very old and not of a good standard. Saying all that it was very very cheahp. Only 27 Euro for the two of us!. The setting was beautiful. The fixtures and fittings in the rest of the hotel are very tasteful. The little courtyard garden is tranquil and a nice addition. I would certainly stay here again but will book in advance to ensure a better room.

Casa Grande La Almuina: Out of the way luxury

by markyg

If you are wanting to spend some time in the Galician countryside, then the out of the way town of Arbo would be a nice place to start. Casa Grande La Almuina overlooks the Portugese border. It is minutes off of the main highway going from Vigo to Ourense, but it feels like centuries away. It is less than 100 km from Santiago.
Casa Grande is an old mansion, with centuries of styles within. Oh yeah, and it is a winery with some great red and white wines. The family that owns it was incredibly friendly and helpful, though they spoke little english. One can dine at the house or in town. The town is known for it's eel and eel festival. I felt like royalty staying in the house and we were the only other guests, so had the run of the place. On our way out one night we wanted a glass of wine. They ended up brining us some meats and a bottle of wine and we sat basking in the sunset for the evening, never leaving the courtyard.

Hotel Stella Maris - Combarro: Friendly and Comfortable

by nhcram

A friendly lady greeted us at the reception area and found us a lovely room overlooking the water. She did her best to help with our questions and was able to recommend the restaurant next door which, did serve excellent food.
The room had twin beds a great view and a superb bathroom with both bath and shower.
I would definitely stay here again.

Breakfast is simple fayre of toast and cheese and jams, the staff friendly and the place clean.

Hostal La Estela: Sleeping in Santiago

by blint

This hostel has a great location at the foot of the main Cathedral. We unfortunately got the worst room on the ground floor that smelt of damp. Though in summer it might be nice because it has a balcony door that goes out to street. Sitting out there in summer would be nice. The top floor has views of the cathedral to. Although we never tried it, it looks like it has a nice communal breakfast area.

I remember thinking it was a little bexpensive or the quality of the room (though I think we got the worst room), but then I suppose you are paying for the location! I think it was 40 euros for a double.

Hospedaje Penelas: Pontevedra: If you want to sleep don't stay here!

by blint

When we stayed here the man next door was snored and man was he a snorer. The problem is the walls are REALLY, VERY, VERY Thin in this hostel, It felt like the snorer was in the same bed as me. He just wouldn't stop! It was a nightmare. I realised the next morning there was a paper thin hatch that joined our rooms!

The owner was so old and nice I really couldn't complain, but I recommend this hostel as a last resort just encase you get stuck next to a snorer too!

Apart from that the rooms were SPOTLESSLY clean and smelt VERY clean too. Unfortunately the snorer was a bit messy in the shared bathrooms too.

At least it was cheap!

Monte do Gozo: Booking on the internet ??

by into-thin-air

After looking on the internet for ages I came across the Hotel at Monte do Gozo, It was a Lot less expensive than the ones in the city centre and a lot closer to the airport and as we were arriving on the 23.59 flight it made good sense to stay here and save money on the late night taxi !!
It is worth while checking several web-sites as prices for this hotel vary Enormously -- we ended up booking a room for around 47 Euro's
The Hotel is Enormous and the rooms are in chalet style blocks, Rooms are en-suite with TV and are quite spacious and well furnished if somewhat soulless !!!
Then the next morning it is a delightful hours walk into Santiago de Compostela centre !!!

Friendly place, Good value at 24 Euro's per night for a Very Comfortable and well furnished en-suite room with tv !!
Great food in the camida too !!!
