Arriving April 28th, where should I stay?

by EuroCory

Hello, I'm arriving in Europe - specifically Santiago de Compostela, Spain - in which I will make my way down to Porto.

While in Santiago... where should I stay? anywhere fun? any good hostels?

If you want a basic hostel, I can suggest you "Hostal Girasol". It's in the old town, very close to the cathedral, in a quiet location. The rooms are OK, some of them have view on the street that's a pedestrian area, so no worries about too much noises.
Look here: http://www.hgirasol.com/

I was there last september and it was ok.

Anyway, Santiago is full of lodgements, from luxury hotels to very basic hostals.

I don't know many funny things you could do there, but there are some interesting things to visit in and around the city.

Greetings.

Travel Tips for Santiago de Compostela

Galicia

by b1bob

Santiago de Compostela is in the province of Galicia in the extreme northwest of Spain. Despite its repression during the Franco years (1939-75), the Galician language and culture (and that of other regions) has made a comeback since the dictator's death in 1975. Spanish is still spoken here, but you can often hear Galician spoken in the streets and see signs in both languages.

TAXI

by keltic

Taxis are rather expensive in the city. They assume distances are short, people either walk or take the bus, so they have to charge you more to get to places, in any case fare are official. So taxi drivers are usually very honest, and dont expect an unofficial overcharge for being foreigner. They wont cheat you (or almost they dont). Taxi fares to the airport is expensive, about 16 euros for just 6 miles. But its the only alternative if you have an early flight. The first bus leaves the city at 6:40.....too late for many flights.

Most taxi are radiotaxi. So a single number for all services and locations. 981568210

Cathedral - overview

by micas_pt

Santiago de Compostela is known all over the Catholic world, since it is one of the three main Catholic symbols, together with Rome and Jerusalem.

The Cathedral is the ex-libris of Santiago de Compostela. It is said to be the most extraordinary monument built in Spain in Middle Age. The Cathedral has a total surface of about 23.000 square meters and its central nave is 97m long and 20m high. It is often said that Santiago is the stone converted into art.

Since there is so much to say about the Cathedral, I will split it into:
. history
. façade
. chapels
. other rooms

Cathedral - other rooms

by micas_pt

There are other places worth visiting in this amazing Cathedral:
. the Museum: archaeological museum dedicated exclusively to the Cathedral
. the Cloister: it is considered a fine example of Spanish Plateresque architecture. Here are situated the thumbs of several noblemen from Galicia
. the Capitulate room: the major highlight here is a rococo cut of the Apostle
. the Library: the place where is kept the "botafumeiro", a unique masterpiece
. the Tapizes Museum: this Museum exhibits diverse collections and has great views over the Obradoiro Square

St Francis of Assisi Monument

by micas_pt

This Monument is near the Convent of San Francisco de Valdedios and was built as an homage to St Francis of Assisi, who, accordingly to the legend, founded the mentioned Convent in 1214 when visiting Santiago de Compostela.

The Saint Francis of Assisi Monument was manufactured by Asorey.
