by spacehopper
'Ola Santiagoers,
I am coming to see you again next week. Can you tell me what the weather will be like/is like at the moment? Do I need by my Paraguas or shall I pack my Biquini? How many
Saltadors will I need?'
Thanking you in advance
Jacqui

Too bad you weren't coming during the week of the 28th, we could hang out and explore together.

Definitely not Biquini time... and you should ALWAYS pack your Paraguas when travelling to Galicia (just in case). Well, I'm at the opposite part of the peninsula but it seems you'll be lucky and have an acceptable weather.
'How many Saltadors will I need?’..........LOL!!!!!!!!! (direct translations are so tricky!!!!!!!!!!!!)

In fact this winter hasn´t rained that much, I would say lots of sunny days. So don´t expect daily rainfalls, it a bit of a sterotype.
Travel Tips for Santiago de Compostela
El Botafumeiro
by ncfg
Well, when I had been in S.Compostela I didn't see Botafumeiro in action. I just saw it in television and it is amazing.
Botafumeiro is a huge incense holder that is moved back and forth on ropes by some men. It crosses the cathedral and throws incense over the people's heads.
They tell that it was used in the old times because of the pilgrims smell and the incense takes the bad smell away.
Botafumeiro is in the cathedral of Santiago and take action in the day of the celebration of the Saint and others holy days.
On foot

You can go by several Santiago’s trails, the Portuguese, the Spanish and the French.
Prepare your feet ...
For centuries, pilgrims bound for Santiago de Compostela preferred the Ponte de Lima (Portugal) way (part of the military Roman road leading from Braga to Astorga) for its being shorter, however harder and rougher across the Labruja mountain. This Santiago route is still maintained and is among the best preserved in Europe. A milestone of this road (turned pillory) can be seen at Bertiandos, on the courtyard of a stately house. Take a look at the photo.
Misa del Peregrino (Pilgrim's Mass)
by xanaia
Every sunday at 12.00 pm the pilgrim's mass is held. But due to the arrival of thousands and thousands of pilgrims this event is held most days at the same time. The cathedral is crowded when this mass is being held. But the peak moment arrives at its very end when some priests in red (known as "tiraboleiros" ) bring from the cloister the famous "botafumeiro" and tie it to some ropes just in front of the high altar.
The botafumeiro is a huuuuuuge silver censer . Once it has been tied, it is swung by these heavy ropes across the transept of the Cathedral, with charcoal burning inside. It almost touches the ceiling, with the charcoal glowing red hot as it flies through the transcept. It is said that the purpose of the botafumeiro was to carry the prayers of the people to heaven. Others say, it was to freshen the odor of the air in the Cathedral in the early centuries when the exhausted pilgrims would sleep in the Cathedral. Which is it? It is for each to decide. Definitively, you can miss it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Santiago de Compostela Cathedral
by into-thin-air
Without Doubt one of the most impressive Cathedrals that I have seen Anywhere in the World is that of Santiago de Compostela !! When you arrive it is sure to be crowded with both fellow Pilgrims and other visitors -- So my tip is if you want to see it peacefully to get up early in the morning and take a look around it !! This photo was taken soon after 08.00 and as you can see there isn't a soul around !!!!
Torre de Reloj
by Shabu
The majestic Torre del Reloj or Berenguela, over seventy metres high, stands over both the Plaza de las Platerias and the Plaza de la Quintana. At the height of the Baroque period, Domingo de Andrade constructed his master work on a Gothic base, extravagantly sculpting its walls. The tower houses the Berenguela bell, which marks the passing of time, as well as the lantern which guided the pilgrims and which is lit in Holy Years and on special occasions.
