Whilst walking the Camino de Santiago you pass through Many Interesting cities, towns and villages and the Architecture in some of them is Fantastic. One of Spain's Most Famous Architects was Antonio Gaudi and you will have the opportunity to see some of his work in both Leon and Astorga. His Buildings are Really Spectacular and Well Worth going to see -- So Don't Miss Them !!!

Madrid

by b1bob

About 8 or 9 hours by train (probably 2 by air) is Madrid. There are plenty of sightseeing, dining and cultural opportunities to be had here. I studied Spanish at the Complutense in the summer of 1990 and it was then and there where I met my eventual host in Santiago de Compostela, my buddy Fernando who is my friend to this day.

Santiago DE Compostela

by alectrevor

Santiago de Compostela is a medieval city in north Spain., and has been the final call on a christian pilgrimage for many years. Even if you are just a tourist it is a magic place to visit. The Cathedral dominates the city, inside hanging from ceiling is a huge incense burner that when in use swings wildly across the building . 5 photos.

Monte del Gozo

by into-thin-air

The first glimpse the Pilgrim gets of Santiago de Compostella is from the top of Monte del Gozo ( The aptly named mount of Joy )
Here in ancient times the Pilgrims did their ceremonial washing / cleansing before proceeding on into Santiago de Compostella. Now it is the sight of this monument and the Biggest Refugio in the whole of Spain with 800 beds !!!!

Catedral de Santiago (13/14): The Façades (3/4)

by Redang

The eastern façade is at the Praza da Quintana. It has two main portals: The Holy Door (see the Local Costumes tips and squares of the Cathedral in his section) and the Royal Door. This Baroque façade was built by Fernández Lechuga in 1.611. Again one finds above the door statues of St. James and his two disciples.

The Clock Tower is 72 m. high, and it was built at the end of the XVIIth century for defensive use.
