Berdia

by bferris

I know this is a long shot but I wonder if any VT member in Galicia is able to obtain a phone no for the post office in Berdia? - can't find it on the net. I am looking for the family Portos Sande who ran it in the 1980's, specifically their English neice Theresa whom I met in 1987. Many thanks.

Sorry I cannot help you, I have looked through my books to no avail. You could try asking the same question on www.santiago-today.com.

They are a very helpful bunch and are based in Santiago so will probably be able to find out more for you.

Best wishes

Two Portos Sande in the telephone book living in the area and in the same place, BUSTO which I assume is close to Berdia.
Portos Sande A 981691891
Portos Sande M 981691815
Good luck. The only families with that name in the whole city.

Thanks for your help - I have been given an address for a contact at:
Son de Abraixo 1
Santiago de Compostela
15890
Le Garcia

but cannot locate this on a map! Does it make sense?
You are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful city - hope to hear from you.

Its too small to be found in a map. Just a bunch of houses. Lies on the north left side of the industrial state at only one km. Just ask for "Mercagalicia" (The biggest food sellers in the industrial state, drive one km along a small road and you´ll get to it. It´s La Gracia. Not many people know about it.

Travel Tips for Santiago de Compostela

Beliefs and traditions

by ncfg

Inside the Cathedral there is an image of a saint or self-portrait of Master Mateo, the architect of the cathedral's main facade. According to tradition, if you knock your head three times against the saint, you acquire wisdom. Well I knocked but I don't remember what I asked for or if the wisdom was acquired .
In spanish the saint is called : O Santo dos croques.

The Early Bird Catches the Worm !!!

As a lot of the Refugios have you out Early in the morning you are often walking just as the sun is coming up !! and that's a Great time to get some Interesting photo's, This is one I like of the early Morning Mist, well the mist is actually in the valley below us but I think it makes a Good photo -- so Remember to keep that camera Handy, Even if the sun hasn't quite risen yet !!!!

The "Goria" Gate (Portico de la Gloria)

by SirRichard

This is the gate I was talking about. It was once the exterior gate of the church but after some refurbishing, they decided to build a new facade in fron to protect this wonder from outside elements and to let pilgrims stop here and enjoy it in a more comfortable way (rain is very often here).
If you have aguide or pay attention to others explanations, you will see there are many histories and rich details in every carved figure here: God, Virgin Mary, disciples, saints... Figures are extremely well done and the whole group is a real wonder.

Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos

by xanaia

This 5 star hotel was built in 1492 to shelter pilgrims. Today this building, in Plateresque and Renaissance styles, serves as Parador de Turismo, the best of Santiago de Compostela. From the outside it's also beautiful, hehehe.

Medicine School

by micas_pt

The building that nowadays houses the Medicine School was built between 1910 and 1912. It is near the Hostal dos Reis Católicos, so don’t miss it. In front of the Medicine School is located the Monasterio de San Martin Pinario (Monastery of San Martin Pinario).
