Places to visit around Santiago

by LosSuaves

Hi,

I will go to Santiago de Compostela for 3 days. I was thinking about spending 2 days in Santiago and go somewhere else for a day. What would you recommend?

I will be using public transport so should be kind of close to Santiago as I don't want to spend the day travelling. Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance,

You could go to either Coruna or Pontevedra. They are both just one hour away from Santiago, by bus or train, and there is plenty to do and see in either city to keep you busy the whole day.

Good luck.

Vigo is a 1:30 -2 hr train ride away.

We would suggest Finisterre. Great walking along the coast. The village is crap though. Vigo is also not a nice place to go too. It advertises it self as the biggest city in Galicia. What with all the noise, pollution factories etc. give it a miss this time, as your trip is short.

I agree that Vigo is not a beautiful city... but from there you can reach by boat the Islas Cíes and they are a paradise!!!
If you visit Galicia in the summer, Islas Cies are a must.
Old town of Pontevedra is beautiful.
From Santiago you can also go by bus (not train) to Cambados, a delicious little town with amazings sunset and a very well preserved traditional architecture.

Travel Tips for Santiago de Compostela

Tarta de Santiago

by MaheshSamtani

Tarta de Santiago is a local delicacy. It is a cake made of Almonds with a sugar powder topping. Simply delicious. This is something that I try to taste as regularly as possible, however it was a must buy when in Santiago. the question is where do I get the good stuff and not get nothing less than my expectations. The main street called Rua Franco has many stores where the salesman will literally catch you and sell you this item as well as other local delicacies. The price of this cake here is 8 Euros, which is not expensive but I found better prices in the adjecent streets. I landed up buying 2 for 7 Euros at the following address
Autoservicio El Dubres - C/ Azabacheria Nº 8 - Santiago - Tlf: 981 58 43 04. It is just a supermarket. The product was good, fresh and tasty - upto my expectations.

The Small towns where time stands still !!

by into-thin-air

With the decline in the manpower needed in modern agriculture some of Spain Rural Villages and Small Towns have suffered a Huge decline in population !! However this leaves the Pilgrim with an Excellent opportunity to see how people lived many years ago !! Because of the lack of demand for houses in these villages, they have been left almost totally undeveloped !!! a Rare Chance for a glimpse back in time !!!

Chinese food in Galicia? Who would have guessed?

by b1bob about Restaurante Gran China

Officially at 9.00, Fernando turned 21 years old. His mother says he was born 2 weeks later than planned at that time on the money. At that time, Fernando, Natalia, and I were in the next town over from the beach. We returned home and Fernando said he wanted to go to that Chinese restaurant that opened up right below his flat.

We had a Chinese salad with an egg roll and Chinese-style bread, chicken with almonds (I gave him all the almonds because, in my opinion, almonds are only good in candies and cakes), sweet and sour pork, pineapple for dessert, with water and saki to drink. All that food came to a fair price, which I insisted on paying in honour of the birthday boy. Everything we ate was good, but I loved the spring rolls, the Chinese bread, and the Chinese salad. the service was friendly and they really did up the Chinese atmosphere. I don't normally groove on Chinese food, but the Restaurante Gran China earns an easy A.

Get your certificate!

by freya_heaven

Whether you have walked all or just part of the Camino De Santiago from France as a pilgrim you can recieve a certificate of your pilgrimage. You must have walked at least 100km to be eligable for the certificate.

You can collect this from the Pilgrims Reception Office in the Casa del Dean, 1 Ruo do Vilar.

IGLESIA DE SALOME (SALOME'S CHURCH)

by xanaia

In this church you will find the only angels in the whole world that wear glasses. Entering the church they are on the left side of the church. They are very small so you have to look very carefully. Don't expect to find the body of the angel but only their faces.
