Best accommodation in Santiago de Compostela

This luxury Hotel was a hospital in olden days (see the Things to Do section), and it belongs to the Paradores Nacionales network.

Historic Builiding

I expected more from this hotel. Of course it is centrally located in the best place of Santiago: Plaza del Obradoiro, just in the same square where you can find the Cathedral and the "Xunta de Galicia" and it is true that you can appreciate that it is a buiding with a couple of centuries of history on its back (the hotel dates from the XV century, in the time of the "Reyes Católicos"). However, I was really disappointed with the rooms, since we paid 240 Euros for a standar room, which was quite small and did not differe much from the standards of a good three star hotel for which we could have paid less than 100 Euros. Notwithstanding the aforementioned, breakfast buffet is nice and fits the standards of a five star hotel.

Unique Quality: Great location and historic building

Sleeping in a monument.

The Parador group has two 5 stars hotels, this one in Santiago and the former monastery-hospital San Marcos in Leon.

The standard room at Los Reyes Catolicos costs about 280 Euro/night (there are often promotions) and the expense is worthwhile, not so much for the room itself but for the monumental building which was once a Royal Hospital founded in 1499 by the Catholic Monarchs Isabel I of Castille and Ferdinando II of Aragon who by their wedding had consummated the unity of Spain. In that time the Royal Hospital had the best and most advanced resources: doctors, assistants, facilities, pharmacy.
Nowadays the attraction of the hotel is being found in the four cloisters with patio's and fountains, the monumental halls and staircases, the elegantly furnished lounges and corridors, the luxurious dining room.
As for the rooms, our experience was limited to a standard one and here I must say that as what concerns comfort this room was closer to the other 4 star Paradors than to a 5 star international chain hotel. But well, one is not staying in this historic hotel to find the latest electronic gadgets in the room.
It should be added that this hotel is often chosen for celebrations or meetings. It can be a bit noisy around the halls and staircases.
The breakfast was similar to other 4 star Paradors so that the higher price is not due to the food assortment but to the architecture.
We did not have diner at the Parador but at restaurants rua do Franco.

Hostal de los Reyes Católicos

I have never stayed here (sleeping I mean), as I have relatives in Santiago and slept with them. But we came for an afternoon coffee after visiting the Obradaoiro Square. It is a wonderful buildong, don't miss the chance of visiting its quiet patios and enjoy the calm and majestuosity of its interior.
It was once a sleeping place for the pilgrims that came along the route to Santiago, but now is a PARADOR, run by the state. Here is where big personalities come to stay while they visit Santiago.

The Oldest Hotel In Spain

Los Reyes is a fantstic hotel, with lots of beautiful interior design. It is a huge building, with four open air courtyards all containing fountains, gardens and covered walk.
The bathrooms in the luxurious rooms are very nice, with shower/tub combos and delux toiletries.
There are also 2 restaurants, a bar, salon, room service, babysitting, laundry service, and dry cleaning.

It is great, but not cheap. I got to go with my father on one of his paid business trips.

Great for couples.

Unique Quality: Again, I was honestly blown away by the bathrooms. They were just so nice, like those bathrooms you see in the houses of mob bosses in the movies.

World's oldest hotel

Staying in this hotel is truely an experience. It is the oldest hotel in the world, apparently. It dates from 1499, when it used to be used as a hospital for travelers who make the pilgrimage to Santiago each year. It is an incredible specimin of archetecture, and it is HUGE. i don't know how many rooms they have, but it's a lot. The rooms are nice, and tradionally decorated. The location is great, right in the plazado Obradoiro, near restaurants, and bars. it's a very unique experience.

Arguably the best hotel in the world

This is possibly the oldest and best hotel in the world. The end point for the rich who did the Camino de Santiago. Well worth the expense to stay in this Parador.

Sleep like a king/queen

This hotel was built in 1499 as a hospital and hostel for the pilgrims that arrived to Santiago.

Unique Quality: "Hospital Real, a refuge for pilgrims at the end of the 15th C. Framed by the Plaza do Obradoiro, art is its essence. A former refuge for pilgrims, the hotel is now a museum along Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque lines, considered to be the oldest hotel and one of the most emblematic in the world. Its interior is also impressive: four cloisters of immense beauty, elegant living rooms, bedrooms, and a luxurious dining room." (From http://www.castleshotels.com/hotels/20010521192604/)
