Beaches and coast
by micas_pt
Vigo is situated by the sea and that coastal area is so beautiful!! I would advise everybody to go out of the city and enjoy the fantastic beaches and coastline. Although it is bathed by the cold Atlantic Ocean, and weather is so uncertain, you may still find some hidden beaches which turn out to be a good choice as they seem to be sheltered from the wind and cold water.
Vigo - Main City of Galicia
by MikeAtSea
The most important fishing port in Spain dates back to Roman times. From the 16th to 18th centuries, its active commercial trade with North America attracted English buccaneers to its waters in search of treasures from the galleons returning with riches from the Spanish colonies. In 1589, Francis Drake attacked the harbour and
sacked the town. In the 19th century, modern Vigo was born and became rapidly one of the largest cities in Galicia.
Vigo enjoys a beautiful setting surrounded by pinewoods and gardens. The town is built in an amphitheatre around the south bank of the deep harbour, and its entrance is guarded by the Cies Islands.
The old town and fishermen’s quarter are worth exploring as is Mount Castro, crowned by a castle fortress which commands a magnificent view of Vigo and the bay.
SHOPPING
Main shopping areas are found along the central Gran Via and Puerta del Sol streets. The popular department store, El Corte Inglés, is located about 3 miles from the port. Among popular buys are ceramics, shoes and leather articles. Store hours are generally from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The department store opens at 10:00 a.m. and does not close for lunch. The local currency is the euro.
CUISINE
Tapas bars are popular for sampling a variety of local snacks. Many restaurants specialize in seafood found in great varieties off Galicia’s coast. Oysters, mussels, lobsters and fresh fish as well as savoury meats, soups, stews and excellent cheeses make for delicious meals. A good selection of restaurants can be found at La Piedra, near the port.
OTHER SIGHTS
A panoramic overview of Vigo can be had from Mount Castro. Most of the attractions are located outside of town, with focus on the Rias Baixas (Low Estuaries) and the scenic, hilly countryside, more green and lush than anywhere else in Spain.
