A major growth industry along this part of the Mediterranean coast is the plastic greenhouse, to ensure that city-dwellers receive supplies of fruit and vegetables in and out of season. In hilly areas, re-working of the landscape on a vast scale is necessary. Environmentally friendly? Sustainable? Plants need plenty of water, and this is one of the driest, sunniest parts of Europe.
Perhaps we all ought to, in the words of Voltaire in 'Candide', go and cultivate our OWN gardens (or allotments).
