Can fly from Dublin Ireland to Cartagena, Spain. What is public transport like between the two cities i.e. should I hire a car? Also is Murcia nearest airport to Cartagena?

Yes, Murcia is the closest airport and Ryanair do cheap flights between Dublin and Murcia. DUB -> MJV

I would definitely recommend renting a car if coming to Cartagena. There is public transport, but car hire is cheap and you will make much more of your journey with one. You can hire at the airport. Have a look online to compare deals. I live here, but found goldstar the cheapest when I look for guests staying.

Hope this helps!

More than historic remains, in Cartagena is noticeable the effort to keep finding them. In several parts of the city digging is continued, and here and there, the new elements found but not yet well prepared to be seen are already announced.

Peral subway

by solopes

In my visit to Cartagena I had no idea about what meant a subway in display facing the harbour. Afterwards I read that it was a prototipe conceived by Isaac Peral in 1885, propelled by electric energy. It failed some tests and didn't reach the needed autonomy, the project being abandoned. The sub was forgotten until 1965, when the naval commander decided to expose it in front of the submarine base.

Festival La Mar de Músicas

by Aitana

La Mar de Músicas is a festival that takes place yearly in Cartagena since 1995. Every year the festival is dedicated to a country and the different musical genres of the country are represented. La Mar de Músicas also organises alternative activities such as cinema, literature and exhibitions dedicated to the invited country.
The festival is in July. Several places along the city are used as auditoria, such as the Old Cathedral, the Parade Ground of the Park of Artillery, the Auditorium Parque Torres and the Arab Castle.
The 8th edition (2002) was dedicated to “Cartagenas and Cartagos del Mundo”.
