Apartamentos Serena Golf
Impressive apartments...inconvenient location
We stayed at Apartamentos Serena Golf for 2 nights during our visit to Los Alcazares in July 2014.
We booked our stay through www.booking.com and paid €60 per night for an apartment with no breakfast included.
We paid our bill in full when we arrived at the hotel.
The accommodation consists of a main hotel building and two apartment blocks either side of a large swimming pool.
Apartamentos Serena Golf is located some distance to the south west of the centre of Los Alcazares, next to a golf course and a busy highway.
When we booked it we didn't appreciate how far from the centre it was and, with the benefit of hindsight, we wouldn't have booked to stay here if we had realised how far out it was.
We arrived in Los Alcazares on a bus from Santiago de la Ribera and disembarked close to the Town Hall. We knew roughly which direction the hotel was in, so we began to walk, despite the fact that it was very hot and sunny. I figured we'd be there in about 20 minutes. I was wrong. After stopping to ask directions a couple of times and wandering around residential areas hoping to find somewhere serving cold drinks, we eventually arrived at the hotel more than an hour after we had started walking. Even if we had known where the hotel was and had taken the most direct route, it would still have been a 45 minute + walk from the centre.
I wouldn't recommend walking from the centre of Los Alcazares to this hotel. Especially if it's July...and stiflingly hot...and you're wheeling suitcases along with you...and your fiancee doesn't like walking long distances at the best of times...and likes to remind you of that fact! It's not much fun!
Thereafter we used taxis whenever we were travelling between the hotel and town centre. The journey took around 10 minutes and the one way fare was between €9 and €11 depending on the time of day and our chosen drop off point.
If you have a hire car, the hotel is conveniently located next to the AP-7 Motorway and there is plenty of car parking around the hotel.
Although we didn't undertake the journey ourselves, I understand it is a 15-20 minutes taxi journey from Murcia-San Javier Airport.
I would only recommend staying here if you have a car or are visiting to play golf on the adjacent golf course (or intending to stay around the swimming pool all day).
Our ground floor apartment, in apartment block 2 to the right of the swimming pool as you enter from the main hotel building, was very impressive.
It was very spacious and airy. The air conditioning system was very good; we couldn't hear it or feel it blowing out cold air, but it kept the room at a comfortable temperature throughout our stay.
The bedroom was comfortably, but simply, furnished; it contained a double bed, a wardrobe, a couple of bedside cabinets with lamps and little else. It was simply a room to sleep in. Everything else that we needed was in the lounge/dining room, kitchen or en-suite shower room.
The lounge contained a sofa, a couple of armchairs, a coffee table and a large flat screen TV which picked up around 20 Spanish channels. This opened into the dining room which included a dining table, four chairs and a cabinet filled with all the cutlery and crockery that we would ever need.
The kitchen contained more than enough appliances for a lengthier stay than ours. It included an oven, a microwave, a large fridge/freezer, a toaster, a kettle, a washing machine and cupboards filled with cooking utensils and cleaning products.
The en-suite shower room was modern and well-equipped. It featured a power shower with several settings and a constant supply of hot water. Towels were provided (only bathroom towels, not pool towels), but no toiletries were provided.
Our balcony was on the back of the hotel, facing out over barren land towards the golf course. At first we were disappointed not to get a balcony overlooking the pool, but this turned out to be a blessing as our friends, who did have a balcony overlooking the pool, were woken early by the sound of poolside music and kids splashing in the water!
The hotel offers free wi-fi in communal areas. I didn't take my netbook on this trip, so was unable to make use of it. However, there are a few computer terminals in reception which I was able to use, free of charge, to access the Internet.
The hotel has an onsite restaurant, but we didn't visit it. We could have paid for the buffet breakfast, but it was expensive, so we gave it a miss.
The reception staff were friendly and helpful. They arranged taxis for us each time we left the hotel and furnished us with a detailed street map of Los Alcazares.
We generally faced a short wait of 5 or 10 minutes whenever we ordered a taxi.
The apartments at Serena Golf are very impressive. They contain everything that you would need for an extended stay, with a fully functional kitchen and comfortable lounge area. The location would put me off staying here again; I would only recommend staying here if you have a car, are playing golf at the nearby course or intend to spend most of your time around the hotel swimming pool. Otherwise, it's a 10 minute / €10 taxi journey into and out of town.
Directions: Located several kilometers south west of the centre of Los Alcazares, next to a golf course and the AP-7 Motorway. Circa 15-20 minutes taxi ride from Murcia-San Javier Airport.
