Great value spa break
We have just got back from staying at the Barcelo Lodomar Apartments, booked online. We had an apartment which sleeps 4 – 2 in a twin bedded room and 2 on double sofa bed, for only 2 of us, breakfast included for only 50 euros.
The hotel was recommended to us by a friend who goes every year for spa treatments, and whilst I was a little hesitant due to the other reviews here about the apartments, we were looking for a one night stop on a 3 day bike tour which was ending in Granada.
The check in was easy, being open 24hr, and the staff helpful and spoke English – so I don’t see where the issue was with previous reviewer – but this is a very Spanish resort – if you want England with sun then head up the coast to Benidorm.
The girl gave us an apartment which seemed a long walk around – the hotel and apartments are separate entrances – which is nice as if just self catering then you have your freedom to go and do as you please. The reason for the long walk is that she had given us one with a view of the huge pool rather than over looking the hotel rooms and small terrace in between.
The only fault I could find was the chipped worktop…..didn’t look very nice, but for 50 euros for B&B for the 2 of us I can’t really fault it any more.
Would I return? Yes… at that price, not a problem at all. We had loads of hot water, fresh towels, beds weren’t hugely comfortable but then we do have a tempur mattress at home, so anything apart from that is weird.
It is a little out of the main area... but there is a bus stop right outside the door - and do check out the mud baths near the windmill..... we have been there before and weren't going anywhere as we'd just planned on eating then an early night before another few hours on our bike the following day to Baza.
I'd not recommend the apartments for wheelchair bound people... they have a couple of steps up to the ground floor ones and a flight up to the 1st floor.
Unique Quality: The apartment was huge – about 40 mt square, with very generous storage space for 4 people. It had everything you could need… it wasn’t luxury but then in reality if you want luxury you don’t go self catering. There aren’t 25 million tv channels… probably as its in Spain, and you’re a stones throw from the sea, so they expect you’ll be spending most of the time out of the apartment.
The breakfast buffet was very good… plenty of choice and stock well…the evening buffet was a touch pricey at 17 euros a head without drinks, but there was an option to upgrade for 12 euros to media pension which would have made dinner cheaper, but we ate in the bar from the snack menu which was more than adequate and with very prompt service from the barman.

Basic but lovely
Situated near the waterfront in a quiet residential area, the Barcelo Lodomar is split into two adjacent sections - the hotel and the self-catering apartments.
Within the hotel is a breakfast room/restaurant, a bar, health and beauty spa, indoor thalasotherapy pool and an ordinary outdoor pool. There is also a car park under the hotel which can be accessed from outside or via the lift or stairwell within the hotel.
Staff in the restaurant and hotel in general were very kind and efficient, always happy to help. We had a small problem with the air-conditioning and a repair man came within 5 minutes and fixed it straight away.
Spa area downstairs. Conventional beauty treatments, facials and manicures on offer plus more unusual such as chocolate wraps and wine therapies.
Thalasotherapy pool and jacuzzi recommended for people with mobility problems. I use a wheelchair, have very little use of my arms so cannot usually swim and use floats but the salt makes you completely buoyant. Steps small and gradual with hand rails either side. I could float and swim unaided. There are large buttons on the sides of the pool that activate various functions, eg. bubbles, water jets, showers etc (pics on the website).
Towels are available for hire; swimming cap mandatory, available at desk. IMPORTANT: bring swimming goggles with you! The salt water in the thalasotherapy pool really stings if it gets in your eyes! Open times: Mon-Sat: 10am-2pm & 4pm-9pm, Sunday: 10am-2pm.
Unique Quality: Lots of choice for breakfast, all lovely and fresh. Many different types of cold meat, cheeses, bread and pastries, fruit, yoghurt and some hot foods. There was also a woman at the counter who prepared omlettes on request. An excellent way to start the day!
Lunch and dinner also excellent. Menu changed frequently so there was always something new to try. Soup, salad bar, a choice of meat or seafood paella which was cooked for you fresh at the counter. Lamb shanks, cutlets and roasted turkey legs were on offer along with a range of vegetables and a fabulous deserts - flan, cakes, fruit and more.
Swimming pool and sunbathing areas were spotless. Pool is not acessable for those with mobility problems, no hoist and only ladder-style steps to get in. Also a small pool for children which was shallow and only a few feet away from the main pool.
Three of us stayed in the apartments for a week. There were two twin beds and a sofa bed in the living room. The decor was a little shabby but everything was in good working order, the bedding was clean and comfortable and the apartment in general was spotless (cleaned every day). Plenty of storage space - more draws and wardrobe space than I have at home!
There was a kettle, microwave, large fridge, hob and even a washing machine (in the wardrobe with mop and cleaning equipment). Cutlery, china and glasses provided. Large dining table with seating. Private patio areas on ground floor apartments, balcanies for upstairs apartments with patio furniture. Lovely place to sit in the evening with a bottle of wine. The TV only had Spanish channels. There were volume and channel dials in the living room and bedroom that played different music throughout the day (depending on what albums they have in the hotel, I think). Very relaxing.
don't know anything about hotel rooms but rest of hotel fully accessable. Apartments not very suitable for wheelchair users. Ramp to downstairs apartments VERY steep, shower over bath, not separate. Bathroom sink and kitchen surfaces quite high.
