Top of hike from Lago Ercina: Campround with the ultimate view

If we had backpacked into the Picos de Europa, I would have wanted to stay in the camping area that was at the highest part of our hike. This camping spot is about 6 km from the trailhead and 1500 feet higher. The area is a green meadow with a view of the rugged peaks opposite the gorge.

Some people had taken shelter in one of the stone sheepherder huts in the meadow. Tent of stone hut - take your pick. Beware though, it seemed to us, the location was a bit exposed. You'll want to be prepared for rain and wind.

Olmares Apartments: Picos worst accomodation

Probably run by the rudest people I've come across. I had booked for a couple of weeks but one night was enough! We were caught in traffic and arrived late. After ringing the door bell we were told off by our host for waking them and then told off again by the hostess in the morning. Later, I attempted to park our bicycles in the garden of our accomodation and we were told off again and warned we would'nt be allowed to leave anything around - not even a bicycle pump.
This place is not cheap and you should get 5 star treatment, we got zero star treatment. We demanded our money back and found excellent accomodation in Potes for less money and with a better welcome.

If you are something of a masochist this is the place for you. Suffer humilation as your host berates you in public at no extra cost, experience the embarrassment of offending your hosts who finds the sight of your bicycle offensive to their eyes!

Santillana del Mar Camping: Santillana

I know this place it not in the picos, but it is where we stayed when we visited, and within easy reach of the mountains

Great campsite, pool, bar, shop, launderette.

The reception staff were very friendly & helpful. We were the only people staying there, so we were able to have great views over Santillana & the surrounding countryside
