Charming, Updated, Great Value Castle
Impressive entrance, castle and adjoining church shows its age on the outside, careful renovation on the inside, right in the center of town. Very cute to walk around town “Disney-Spain” very clean.
Driving through the arch of the old town of Olite and parking to unload our bags, we realized why Spain rehabilitates its old castles for thus purpose. The Castle is impressive, imposing, and the church beside it (look out for baby Jesus with no head on the façade) would be a nice setting for a Baroque painting. The town is impeccably clean and manicured (we called it Disney Spain) and it was very pleasant to walk around for an afternoon. We stayed only one night and I can’t imagine there is much more to do in the old town, but we were very happy with that one night. We were upgraded to a room in the castle (some of the rooms are in an adjoining building so I recommend requesting a castle upgrade) and the room was straight out of a period movie or TV show like the Tudors or the Borgias. We had a very good dinner in the Parador restaurant. The portions were large, and hit or miss. We felt the risotto with mushrooms didn’t have the right texture (a little watery), the lamb chilindron (basically a stew) was solid and flavorful, and the veal chop was delicious, though served rare (as all beef is in Spain).
We stopped for one night on the way from San Sebastian to Barcelona and would definitely do so again. Very endearing, truly had an old world castle feeling but without the dust, spiderwebs, outdated bathrooms and bad food I've experienced elsewhere. A great combo of comfort and charm.
Unique Quality: Friendly service, charming bedrooms, updated bathrooms, quaint town, good food.
Directions: right in the center of the old town
More about Parador
The Olite Palace is the centerpiece of the small village of Olite. The parador occupies part of the medieval palace.
The parador has very tasteful medieval decor to tie in with the rest of the palace which was built in the 1500's. The rooms are very nice, with all modern comforts. My room had French doors which opened to a view of a convent/monastery. The restaurant in the parador had excellent food.
In front of the parador is a very pretty square with jasmine trees. The wine museum is right next door. The Church of St. Maria La Real is to the other side. Everything is just a stone's throw away in Olite.
