Transportation/timing in Pamplona
by katherine.p
Hi!
Wondering if anybody has some advice to help us book our trains...
We're going to Pamplona for San Fermin on Sunday July 11, arriving by train from
Barcelona. We're planning to watch the race the next day (8 am, right?), and
then take our next train to Madrid. Could you help me with a few questions?
What is the name of the train station/where is it located within the city?
What time are the streets shut down in the morning (I've heard from 7 am
until...?)
We're staying at San Fermin Suites, do you think we have time to see the rice,
head back to the hotel and still catch a train at 11:20 am to Madrid? Or should
we book the later train out of town?
Thanks so much!

A few years ago I wrote this about Pamplona:
"The "encieros" of San Fermin i.e. the bulls running through the streets of Pamplona/Irunea constitutes an extraordinary witness of the long-lived traditions of Spain. It is always with interest and emotion that I look at them every morning at 08.00 am on the international Spanish TV between July 6th and 14th.
For sure there are injured persons, mostly among the foreign (sometimes drunken) tourists, but it is a part of the game and it is less dangerous, for oneself and for the others, to run in front of the bulls than to drive against sense on the highway.
But the bullfights in the afternoon following the "encieros" are often mediocre. The public is that of a football match, nothing to do with the aficionados at the corridas of Las Ventas arenas in Madrid or the Maestranza in Sevilla.
I accept bullfighting as expression of the Spanish culture and tradition but I hate bad toreros."
Anybody who has visited Spain in depth knows that ALL fiestas have bull fighting afternoons. Bullfighting is an old tradition of Spain. Other countries have other traditions, sometimes not less cruel than bullfighting.

Just for clarification...
I'm not asking about San Fermin festival, I know enough about it, I'm asking about transportation to/from and if our connection seems possible to anybody.

The Spanish railway infrastructure organisation gives a helpful information page including a link to a Google Map showing the station location etc.
http://www.adif.es/en_US/infraestructuras/estaciones/80100/informacion_000111.shtml
You can work out the whereabouts and time needed on Google Maps.
The location of your accommodation is about 4.5 kms from the station
A view and map of the location of San Fermin Suites on Google is :

I would catch the later train. I don't think booking is open yet on www.renfe.es
Read about Matador Jose Tomas and his own goring in Mexico last month and you know the risks faced.
Travel Tips for Pamplona
Basque Wood Chopping Competition
by Roadquill
During the day you can watch local Basque wood choppers hack away at their huge log, attempting to be first in group. Armed with two axes where they switch off, they stand on their respective log with both feet together and whack away. They all finish, even if it means the last participant is whacking away 5 minutes after everyone else has finished. Trophies are awarded by old guys. I think they would do better with trophy girls, but these Basques are stubborn. ;-)
Palacio de Navarra
by mikey_e
The Palacio de Navarra, also on the Paseo de Sarasate, was once the seat of the Diputación de Navarra, but now houses the Government of Navarra (the first is for the Province, the latter for the Community – the two have different constitutional responsibilities). It was begun in the 1840s in neo-Classical style with a tendency towards looking like a palace, and was further renovated in the beginning of the 20th century, when Pamplona was undergoing serious expansion thanks to the destruction of part of the city’s walls. The interior of the Palace is supposed to be quite impressive, as it was designed in Isabelline style with the work carried out by artists from all across the province. I’m not entirely certain that you can enter the building and look around. With the construction of the Second Extension (Segundo Ensanche) in the 1930s, more of the surrounding buildings were designed to blend with the style of the Palacio de Navarra, providing more harmony to the entire area.
Do You Believe in Life After Love???
by Marisola
"Dancing in Pamploma!"
I took a group of students here and at night I went out dancing in Pamploma with our tour guide! We danced all night at a bar where they played Cher's whole album "Believe."
No matter how hard I try...
You keep pushing me aside
And I can't break through
There's no talking to you!
So sad that you're leaving...
Takes time to believe it
But after all is said and done
You're going to be the lonely one, Ohh Oh
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, No!
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
I really don't think you're strong enough, No!
What am I supposed to do?
Sit around and wait for you,
Well I can't do that!
There's no turning back!
I need time to move on
I need love to feel strong
'Cause I've had time to think it through
And maybe I'm too good for you Ohh
Do you believe in life after love?
But I know that I'll get through this
'Cause I know that I am strong!
I don't need you anymore!
I don't need you anymore
I don't need you anymore
No I don't need you anymore!
Do you believe in life after love?
