night life in visby

by mirlox

hello my friends,I am javi from Spain and I am going to visit Visby with some friends in July,I would like you to give some information of the city...
I was told that the coast was fantastic and full of people in summer time,is it true?I also would like to know something about night life and about the kind of people that usually go to the island in summer, are they young?we are 22years old, will I find party?
Thnk you very much

Yes, you will definately find party in Visby. In summer, it is one of the party centres of Sweden. The entire Stockholm seems to land there (hence prices rocket for accommodation etc. and book in advance!). Don't miss the scenic coast and the history of this UNESCO world heritage either because you party too much :)

By the way this is THE nightclub there with three floors full of dance floors etc. and an outdoor stage by the sea. The site is only in Swedish but you get the idea:

If you don't intend to drink a lot when partying, yes driving is certainly the best way if you are short of time - otherwise nothing beats cycling on Gotland!

I've only heard of Tofta, not been there, but check VT's Visby and Gotland pages to find people who have (like VT member el sueco).

Btw car rental is quite expensive in Sweden...

Visby is the only City on Gotland and is the only place that really has any party. Tofta is also popular but there really isn't anything there, just a village and a huge camping area. I think you would like Visby better.

Travel Tips for Visby

The Visby Sheep

by emilienoelle

The big, curly horned sheep (I don't think this is their technical name.) is the symbol of the city. This sheep provided the early settlers with wool and food and is now immortalized on Visby's flag and in many artists' renditions around the island. I especially liked the cement sheep that were placed everywhere. They were cute.

The Medieval Festival

by MikeAtSea

The Medieval Festival is held every year in August. The entire town transforms back into Medieval times with people dressing up in ancient clothes, the market being transformed to by-gone times and functions and events hosted as they were a few hundred years ago. And the natural background is available, the towers and town walls as well as the ruins of Visby. Over the years this has become one of the main medieval festivals in Europe!

Själsö Hamn

by Sjalen

About 8 kilometres north of Visby is this pretty little harbour with its old fisherman's huts where you can sometimes stumble upon someone selling their catch. If not, you might want to time the sunset instead. You come across Själsö if you bike along the Gotland trail northwards and it is also signposted from the main road 149.

Watching architecture

by vec

All over Visby you will find old houses, ruins and, of course, the old city wall. I would really recommend taking the time to just walk around looking on the old architecture, you will not find anything similar to this in Sweden.

Söderport

by Sjalen

The southern gate is different to the others since it has three openings, only one which is used by cars today (residents only in summer). It was outside this gate that the Danish force invaded Visby after fighting a bloody battle which you can learn more about in the museum.
