91:an
by Sjalen
Halmstad is a garrison town and has a history of army presence (there is even an army museum at the barracks north of the city centre but I have not been there myself). This is why in 1932, Rudolf Petersson founded the cartoon about recruit number 91 Karlsson, better known just as 91:an all over Sweden. He based the cartoon on people he had met during his army time in Halmstad and it is thought that 91:an's lady friend is modelled on his own sister. The character always ends up doing stupid things and getting into trouble. Interestingly enough, 91:an still has an old 1950s uniform these days. Fans can flock to the 91:an statue in the middle of Storgatan.
Top league football

Yep. Halmstad has a team in the top football (soccer) league, Allsvenskan, and this is where Fredrik Ljungberg made his debut as a top player. I have only been to a game here once, but little Örjans Vall is a cosy arena and I really recommend it. Money for a hot dog :)
Hallandsgården Open Air Museum

Hallandsgården is a delightful oasis in Halmstad. Set on Galgberget, the "Gallow Hill", where the last execution happened in the 1850s, there are no traces of this today. Instead, there is since 1925 a gathering of old houses from all over Halland in the form of old crofts, farms and mills here. In high season (mid June to mid August) the buildings are open and have staff in them telling you how people might have lived in them. The small croft with its grass roof housed eight people at most which is incredible when looking at it. The dark brown farmstead is gorgeous and a very special design to save heat. There is also a tiny playground and a cafe here (see tip) and great views down to Halmstad below, and even as far as the Bjäre peninsula in Scania if you see it for all the trees. Best is to climb all the way up to the 19th century viewing tower further up if you have a good camera. It is open summertime only I think.
The hill was not always as forested but that happened in the 19th century and these days, the forest acts as a recreation area for runners. Approaching it from Lilla Torg via the stairs further on gives a great walk through an old part of Halmstad full of cottages with nice gardens. See the travelogue below for many more pictures of Hallandsgården houses and views. If you want to visit Hallandsgården off season, get in contact with the Halmstad museum which runs it. Hallandsgården is also the place for Halmstad's official Midsummer celebrations should you be in town (second pic gives a reminder).
Henrik's Halmstad page

Halmstads BK is one of the clubs just under the really classic swedish football clubs. Located on the south west side of Sweden it's a real summer city, and a football game there in June-August is always very nice.
Could be a good thing to spend a whole day in Halmstad before the game, as the city and the surroundings during the summer is among the best places in Sweden. The Tylösand beach, the pubs in the city center, a walk beside the river Nissan are among the things that have made Halmstad famous.
The football club is quite special, as their speciality is to find young talents in small clubs, build them up to good football players, sell them expensive to big clubs, and then start all over again with new, young, talents.
It has made the club rich, but naturally it's hard for them to become really good. Their latest championship they won back in 1997, but just a few years ago they were playing in the group stage of the Uefa cup, after having won against Sporting Lisboa in the qualification.
