 Grand Hotel on the right by hopang
Stockholm's main shopping street Hamngatan is within a stone's throw from the hotel. This is a low rise hotel with approximately 400 well-furnished rooms. Its interior decorations are some of the best you can see in Scandinavian countries! It is considered a landmark in Stockholm.
The Grand Hotel was offically opened for business in 1874 after undergoing building construction between 1872 and 1874. It was founded by Jean Francois Regis Cadier, a French businessman in 1872. The hotel is popular with guests of noble prize winners and their families in December every year.

Medieval city on the largest Swedish island....
At Visby
The Baltic Sea islands of Öland and Gotland have the best summer weather in Sweden, sunny, but not too hot due to a smooth sea breeze. Visby is located on Gotland - Sweden's largest island. This island has a unique and different flora and fauna compared to the mainland because of its limestone surface. The town of Visby is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites because it is a typical North European Hanseatic town with a very valuable settlement from the middle age.
The combination of the islands landscape, a visit to the old city, the many things to see and do on the island, make it a dream spot to visit.
Tip: if you go here think about timing! There are two great festivals you might like to see. In July there is a big event called the Stånga games - The Gotland 'Olympics'. It contains of games like pole throwing and a Jeu-de-Ball-alike game with big stones. In 2004 the festival is held from the 8th until the 11th of July.
Another big festival is the "Medieval Week" that is held annually in the beginning of August. In the year of 2004 it will be held from Sunday the 1st to Sunday the 8th of August. It is a big event, with a tournament, church procession, markets, plays, music, and lots and lots more!

Nice island in the Blekinge Archipelago....
At Tjärö
Tjärö is an island totally owned by the STF -The Swedish Tourist Organization - who has renovated the buildings from the former farming area, and uses the whole island as a recreation spot. The result is a tranquil location in the Blekinge Archipelago - a group of islands in front of the coast.
The island has big open meadows and fields; it is a 'living' Nature Reserve, with horses and sheep grazing in the fields. If you want to get a bit more active, you can go canoeing or sailing around the island.
All in all it is quite a charming and laid-back location. A place to relax!

Dramatic landscape of the high coast....
At Trysunda
At this hostel, located on a little island just outside Örnsköldskvik, you are in the archipelago of Höga Kusten. It is also close to National Park Skuleskogen. On the way here you have probably passed the longest suspension bridge in Sweden; Höga Kusten-bron.
This is a small island with a former fishing village from 14th century. It is now a Nature Reserve and has several short trails to barbeque-places and shelters. You can easily find your own private little beach also. Fishing museum and Church from 15th century.
This is yet another small island where you relax, enjoying the nature and the views of the dramatic landscape.
Ferry from Örnsköldsvik twice a day.

Now I've shown you my top 10 of odd locations, it is time to do some dreaming :-))
Dream spots, places I can dream of going to. Some I hope will be reality soon, like the first one on the list: Abisko. I have plans to go here this summer. A dream I hope will come true.
But the dream doesn't stop here, I dream on, and I've dreamed up 10 places, together with Åke, where we would love to travel to in the near future. And here they are.... the dream top 10.... Theme: Hostel

A hiking centre of 9400 km2....
At Ritsem Mountain Hut
Ritsem is an example of a STF mountain hut, this is a more simple variety of the mountain station (STF Fjällstation); it is always self-catering for example. In Ritsem Mountain Hut there are 80 beds available. In total there are around 40 mountain huts in the Fjällen - the Swedish mountain area.
This mountain hut is one of the most easy to reach by car and that brings you right to a starting point of hikes in Sarek, Padjelanta and Stora Sjöfallet National Parks. These National Parks, together with surrounding Nature Reserves, make an ideal hiking terrain of an amazing 9.400 km2 through the sometimes rough, but always wild nature of Northern Sweden.
Ritsem is located at the lake of Akkajaure and several boat trips could be made from here: crossing the lake to Akkastugorna in the south, or going east towards Stora Sjöfallet. Besides the mountain hut there is also a caravan camp. In my general tips you can find links and information about all the National Parks in Sweden.
It's my dream to go hiking in the fjällen, enjoy the fantastic landscape, the tranquil area, to be one with nature. Of course I will bring my camera on this trip, and try to capture some of the amazing landscapes and the feel of being in this dream spot :-)

Beautiful view over the Lake Vättern....
At Omberg / Stocklycke
Omberg is located on the east side of Lake Vättern and it is a good central point for hikes around the area. You will not only have a nice view over Lake Vättern, but also have a great starting point for trips to important historical sites, like Alvastra Kloster, Visingsö, Vadstena and the Göta Kanal. The whole area around the Nature Reserve of Lake Tåkern has a lot of historical sites. The oldest building in Sweden "Kungsgården" from the 11th century is the oldest preserved Royal building in Sweden. If you are into bird watching than Tåkern is a MUST for you. It is the most important bird reserve of Sweden, which makes it a bird watchers paradise! There are hundreds of species living here.

Do you see the light?
If not... Look up at the lighthouse!
The lighthouse is located at the most southern edge of Sweden - Smygehuk. The hostel is situated in the old lighthouse keeper's house. Close to hostel there is a golf course, good to know for the golf fans among us ;-)) If you can from abroad it is nice to know that there is a ferry to Sassnitz- Travemünde-Rostock in Germany.

The mysterious Troll Forest....
At Brunskog
So why did I choose Brunskog? Because it is the closest hostel to the Glaskogen Nature Reserve :-) I got this tip about Glaskogen - Gla Forest - from my dear friend Viviane (Porteplume). She is a lover of Scandinavia, and she has told me about this beautiful place in Sweden. She has been to Glaskogen several times, and hearing her talk about this place with so much love and enthusiasm has made me realize that this is a true dream spot.
Glaskogen is the land of the trolls, you can imagine them hiding behind one of the trees or big rocks in the forest watching you. So keep your camera ready! And please send me the picture if you see one :-))
Glaskogen is situated on the border area between Arvika, Eda, Säffle and Årjäng in Western Värmland. It is a 280 km2 sized wilderness area with winding watercourses, great and small lakes, and vast forests. You can hike along any of the 300 km long trails; you can choose anything from a short morning stroll to tours that last a week. If you go for a longer walk, you are almost guaranteed to see a moose. Hare, fox, roe, badger and lynx are also common in the area. The dream about a complete nature experience in a quiet and peaceful environment comes true in Glaskogen Nature Reserve.
Tip: In the last week of July there is the "Gammelvâla", which is kind of festival of old times. You can see how they lived in the old days. For example making charcoal stacks, using spinning wheels, etc.
