?re Ridcenter (signposted from E14) and several others offer treks up the fells on reliable Icelandic horses. The best thing is that you often see animals closer on horseback since they can smell the horse but not you...If you want a true adventure with treks across great mountains and sometimes nights in Same tents, then go for one of the various treks with environmentally certified Vemdalens Islandsh?star. They start from STF Storulv?n fell station and treks vary from 2-5 days as do the experience needed to participate.
You definately don't need to be ultra fit or a mountaineer for this one but as you leave the cable car station, you can't see the summit and make yourself a picture to estimate the walk. Only when you've come halfway can you see the "top cottage" in the distance and realise how steep the last bit is for a four-year-old...This is where everyone without that extra determination or the wrong shoes turn around.
We made it! Time for the tastiest cinnamon bun I have ever had (and they are quite a few in 32 years)!
I was surprised to find snow still lying. I know you can ski in Lapland in midsummer but this was only Jämtland, the Åreskutan isn't THAT high and we had had weeks of really high summer temperatures (25-30) even in northern Sweden. Shows you how resistant it is once it's packed together in the shady corners of the mountain...
Despite the wonderful climb, it is nice to come down and see the ski lift station and know that you won't miss that last cable car back down :-)
