Gränna, dont miss it!!
Gränna...
Gränna, dont miss it!!
Gränna was founded in 1652 by count Per Brahe. Hence, the city is also known as the count´s city. The Brahe family has had a lot of influence over the history of Gränna, a fact that is still obvious up to this day.
Gränna truly is one of the most beautiful cities in Sweden. The steep cross-streets and the magnificent gardens makes it a picturesque town, and the sunny location at the Gränna mountain with lake Vättern and the island Visingsö in the background only adds to the beauty.
Walk the streets and visit the small shops and craftsmen, the restaurants and cafés and of course try the peppermint rocks that the city is so famous for. A great destination for a trip is the Gränna mountain, where one can enjoy the beautiful view over Gränna and its surroundings.
A peppermint rock from Gränna is one of the most popular Swedish souvenirs one can find. The whole peppermint rock business started when the poor widow Amalia Erikson in 1859 applied at the city council for permission to open a peppermint rock bakery.
The original recipe of the sticks of hard mint candy Amalia kept a secret, but the production continued anyway and Amalia has had plenty of successors. Now there is a statue of Aunt Amalia in the southern park in Gränna. It is quite fascinating to visit one of the bakeries and see the making of the rocks. They come in all shapes, sizes and flavours nowadays, but remember, an original peppermint rock from Gränna is always red and white and striped!
