Hi! I suppose you come from a Malmö visit since you catch the ferry from Oskarshamn rather than just south of Stockholm...

HM...I grew up in Västervik which is the town just north of Oskarshamn and it is wonderful with its archipelago and ABBA heritage. I don't suppose you will have time to see it though as public transport between the two isn't great. Equally, Kalmar to the south is a nice city with one of our most impressive medieval castles...

HM...Oskarshamn has one of Sweden's nuclear power stations to visit if you're into that sort of thing :-)))

There was also a famous Swedish wood sculpturer from here nicknamed Döderhultaren whose creations (mainy wooden carvings of people and things in the province at the time) can be seen in a museum in the Cultural House in the city centre. The museum is next to the Maritime Museum.

I'll think of more...the surrounding countryside is nice with sleepy farms and an archipelago :-)

Travel Tips for Oskarshamn

OKG Nuclear Power Plant

If you're a techie you shouldn't miss a trip to teh Simpevarp Peninsula, about 30 km north of Oskarshamn. There are 3 different blocks here and also the CLAB, Centralt Lager för Använt Bränsle, the first storage area for used uranium in each of the 12 nuclear Power plants in Sweden. Here the uranium lie in huge waterfilled basins for about 40 years until the radioactivity has gone down enough to be put in the still not built final storage area somewhere in the ground of Sweden.

There is an exhibition hall in the old village of Simpevarp, where you can see films depicting the activites here and so on, and you can drive by car around the different blocks and see the buildings. To actually go inside one opf the blocks I think you need to be part of a group, but I'm not certain.

Directions:
Drive north on the E22 from Oskarshamn, turn right at the large intersection at Fårbo after about 15 km. Follow this road for another 10-15 km until a small sign says "Oskasrhamns Kraftgrupp" to the right.
