various: Your own cheap forest cottage

The cheapest alternative is to contact Älmhult tourist office where they will book a cottage for you. I know there are several around Stenbrohult since we have used that alternative for when we have weddings and similar with lots of guests. If you bring your own sheets or sleeping bag and clean the cottage it gets even cheaper. Most owners ask that you stay for at least two days and if you stay for a week you usually get a better rate.

Very often they are by a lake. All have different standards and facilities so check that you get what you feel comfortable with as not everyone wants to have an outdoor loo even if some find it exotic and it IS the cheapest alternative.

Möckelsnäs Herrgård (mansion): Affordable forest mansion!

The mansion used to be alive with horses and other animals and one of my ancestors was the head groom in the 19th century but as cars took over, it was abandoned and fell into disrepair. In the 80s it was carefully renovated and bought by the local furniture giant IKEA and turned into a hotel/conference centre with a restaurant. I stayed here on my wedding night when we were alone in the whole house due to Easter holidays! Imagine being on your own in a mansion :))) In the 18th century, young Linneaus used to come here with his father and it is not hard to imagine his interest in flowers and so on as the walk here from Stenbrohult is along a couple of nature reserves and a wonderful beech forest. This is why today there is an orangery here too, in honour of Linnaeus (see separate tip).

The mansion is on a peninsula in the Lake Möckeln and most rooms have a lake view. You can also stroll in the gardens which is what the world botanist Linnaeus - a son of the village - will have done as a child. The rooms are not all en suite but there is plenty of space in the corridor bathrooms and this only makes a stay here cheaper than many other mansions.
