Sarek

by LauraMades

Hi! I'm planing to go to Jokkmokk three days in August with my partner. We'd like to do some hiking in Sarek, but have no experience in hiking. We wonder if there is any guided excursion into that park. Does anybody knows it?

We aslo wod like to rafting, but same problem, we have no experience.

I'd aprecciate very much if someone could give me information about companies that organice this kind of activities.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Personally I wouldn't recommend Sarek when you do not have experience in hiking. Sarek is the wildest of the National Parks and the most demanding; it doesn't have hiking trails or mountain huts and is really hard to reach (no roads lead here, only hiking trails). And with your time frame of only 3 days almost impossible to do.

The north of Sweden is beautiful and you don't need to go to Sarek to enjoy the beauty of it. Unfortunately I do not know any guided excursion in the Jokkmokk area, but I would recommend that you contact the Jokkmokk tourist office who without a doubt can give you some advice regarding available hiking and rafting excursions. The link to their website is: http://www.turism.jokkmokk.se/en.aspx

From Abisko Touriststation / tURiststation I made walking during one day and slept at that hostel in Abisko. Maybe they have organized tours along the "Kungsleden"?

Here you can find Abisko Touriststation:

and here about their organized tours: http://www.abisko.nu/sommar/englishpages/guided_excursions.asp

I wish you good luck!

Thank you for your response it was very usefull. I've decided not to go to Sarek and try to find other places to visit in the Jokkmokk area.

Yes for walking in the highlands, Abisko Fell station is a much easier start and very nice. Easier to reach too with its own train station with night trains from Stockholm or just a daytrip from Kiruna.

Travel Tips for Jokkmokk

Jokkmokk Winter Market

by Sjalen

If you can, try to visit Jokkmokk at the annual winter market which has now been going on for more than 400 years. At Lake Talvatis (picture), there are reindeer races and these are perhaps the most well-known feature visitors have heard of, but there is much more. To be ctd.

Jokkmokk Film Festival

by Sjalen

Every other year (uneven), Jokkmokk hosts "Hela Sveriges Film Festival", i,e, All Sweden's Film festival some time in late May. This I think has happened since 1993, but these days it seems to have taken off a bit more and got its own coordinating office. Even during non festival times, Jokkmokk has this fantastic cinema in a barn, Bio Norden, where all sorts of films from really narrow to Hollywood hits are screened.

Jokkmokk Fun Fair

by Leipzig

When we arrived Jokkmokk all roads to the centre were blocked because of the annual fun fair. This fair differed a lot from those in Germany. Of course, you could eat cotton candy or drive scooter and carrousel but the difference was the stalls. At most stalls fishing and hunting equipment as well as hand made products like tablecloths or wooden toys were sold. There were also two selling snowmobiles.

Jokkmokk Fun Fair

by Leipzig

Admission was 20 SEK (~ €2.20) for adults. Most memorable experience was the stall with the antlers. Here you could buy antlers from reindeers. If you see Rudolf the Red Nose Raindeer with a knitted cap next Christmas you know why.
