by Nobbe
Since 1996, Gammelstad Church Town has been un UNESCO World Heritage List, and thereby protected by the 'Convention Concerning the Protection of World Culture and Natural Heritage'.
'Gammelstad Church Town is an outstanding example of traditional church towns in northern Scandinavia. It excellently illustrates the adoption of traditonal town planning to the special geographic and climatologic condition in an unfavourable natural environment.'

Luleå - Gateway to Laplan & Gamelstad
by MikeAtSea
This gateway to Lapland and the Gulf of Bothnia is usually ice-bound each year until May. A short drive north lies Gammelstad, the original medieval city center. Now a World Heritage Site, the town consists of some 400 small, wooden houses clustered around the fifteenth-century stone church; worshipers who lived too far away to return home the same day would stay here overnight. Luleå is also home to the Norrbottens Museum, which features an excellent collection of Saami or Lapp artifacts.
A must see in the area is Gammelstads kyrkstad (‘Old church town’) which is located 10 km north of Luleå. The town is a unique and exciting historical environment and has been on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1996 and was for me quiet an amazing sight!
Luleå, lively city in North Sweden
by Scandic
"Luleå - Luulaja"
It takes just 2 hours to drive from Oulu to Luleå by car, so we it's nice one-day trip. We have done that couple of times with my friends, I recommend it for everyone. Luulaja is a lively city in North Sweden. There are many nice boutiques and plce where you can shop. Many of shops doesn't exists in Oulu, so Luulaja is fantastic for us...=)
But there's more other things to do, for example sport. Luleå is a sport city, with own ice hockey team and they have wonderful archipelago where youcan enjoy sailing.
"Choose your favourite"
Archipelago, museums, theater, sport leisure, oudoors, aurora borealis -northern lights.... As I told, there are many things to do. And there's also a big university in Luleå, so student life there is quite wild.
If you enjoy outdoor leisure and the countryside, then Luleå and its surrounding areas are perfect for a visit. After only a short journey from town you could find yourself in the middle of a forest, fishing for salmon on the open sea, canoeing along a river or admiring the view from the top of a mountain.
