hotels near Folkungavallen

by coryma

First time posting. I'm trying to do some preliminary research into an eventual trip to Linkoping, primarily to go see LFC of the Damallsvenskan. I have followed one of their goalkeepers through her website for a few years (since she was transferred from Malmo FF. I am trying to get an idea of which hotels may be near the Folkungavallen, which is apparently where LFC plays. Tack!

Here is a page where you can see where the stadium:

The "J" is the railway station and the red church is the cathedral so here you see that it is not that far from the centre.

This hotel is one I always see from the train Malmö-Stockholm:

It is very close to the station and on the road to the stadium. No idea what it is like though.

I think VT member lasseg is from Linköping so he might have more tips.

Wonderful! Thanks a lot for your research. Now I gotta get onto and learn about bus/commuter rail routes and their airport. I sure hope the airport isn't in the boondocks like Pittsburgh (USA) is. :(

Linköping has an airport (only to be expected since it is a plane-manufacturing city!) but it's not that international. I think you can get there by connections from Copenhagen though so that might be a transatlantic option. Otherwise, it's not difficult to reach Linköping by train from Stockholm (nor Malmö but then it's further).

So does Pittsburgh (population 330,000 or so), but it's 30km or so from the city. It's still within the county (county falling between city/town and state in the US), but it's in the sticks. Very inconvenient to downtown, or really any city district.

Looks quite nice! Not huge, but for teams like LFC (and apparently LFF), no need for 50,000 seats. Looks like kind of a suburban neighborhood, too. Maybe not?

Thanks immensely, everyone. Between you guys and, I'm learning a ton.

Travel Tips for Linköping

Air Force Fighters

by Psife

In Linköping lies Saab Aerospace, the Swedish company that has produced fighters like The Flying Barrel, Draken, Viggen and the new 4th generation fighter Gripen.

From Linköpings airfield (the same airfield as the airport uses) Saab does test flights at an almost daily basis. Therefor don't be surprised if you hear the roar of an afterburner engine and a sleek fighter screams past above you.

The Chapel of St Mary in Linkoping Cathedral

by Diana75

It should not actually be considered an "off the beaten path" attraction of the cathedral, but one of the most important ones.

Still, if you are not well informed about what you can see in the cathedral you may lose this particularly beautiful work of art.

The Maria window is one of the main engraved works of art and is revealing Maria in a unique floral glory.

The chapel is used for family ceremonies such as christening.

Gamla Linköping is a must see....

by sarasue

Gamla Linköping is a must see. It is great fun to walk through the town and see the old styles of the houses, and see the pictures of what Linköping once looked like.
Be sure to take the time to walk through the different gardens, take a ice cream or buy fresh candy from one of the vendors.

Folke Filbyter Statue

by Diana75

In Stora Torget (Grand Square) is the famous Statue of Folke Filbyter made by Carl Milles in 1927.

The statue represents a man riding a horse. The man was called Filbyter and used to eat young horses.

El Sueco Linköping Page

The Linköping Cathedral is visible from very long distance as it rises 107 m.
The cathedral is the most expensive of the Swedish churches from medevial time and was an evidence of the richness and power of the bishop in Linköping (he had dominion over Östergötland, Gotland, Öland and greater part of Småland).
The work was started with German builders who worked in roman style. Later came men from England which gave the Early English style that can bee seen in the west part.

Renovation work has being done outside as well as inside the church. As you can see it is hard to get sight of the church when coming closer.

State of the nave (November 2003), before the renovation work was completed.
