Kockska gården: Friendly and historical
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Kockska house is an old town house which has even seen Linneus (Linné) as a visitor in the 18th century during his "Skåne tour" (when he categorised plants he made tours of the various parts of Sweden and commented on what he saw). Don't expect the same historical atmosphere today because of the old exterior - the hotel has been modernised afterwards but the interesting thing is that it hasn't for a while now, so things like the staircase and the wall lights look quite Swedish 50s and 60s in the reception area which reminds me of my childhood. The rooms have not been modernised in a while either but beds are comfy and bathrooms new. They have TV but cable only in the lobby. The location is good in the town centre with walking distance to everything and should you have small children, you can borrow a "cart" to pull them in for a walk to the beach. In summer, you can have breakfast in the garden. The owners also did everything they could to make our stay pleasant.

    Baskemölla vandrarhem: Village hostel
  • Satisfaction:
  • A Swedish Touring Club (STF) hostel, which means clean and organised but with check in time 17-18. Having said that, they are also open 9-10 and willing to let you in at other times if you call in advance. Staff is helpful enough although not the most cheerful I've met. The hostel is in a former apple packing house and has everything you would expect (a nicely equipped kitchen!) and is just opposite a truly great country restaurant but the village doesn't have a general store so shopping has to be done in Simrishamn. Not a problem if you have a car or a good bike, but otherwise a bit of a hassle unless you eat out along the way. Great base for bike rides but avoid renting from the hostel neighbours...

It's nice to fall asleep with sheep grazing across the road and with a great old farmhouse opposite (see the Art tip).

Again, one of the best hostels I've stayed in. For a start, it hasn't been up and running that many years so all is very nice and clean. Secondly, the owner family have had this typical Scanian farm in the family since it was built generations ago, so they care enormously about it. The husband runs a furniture shop and is a bit of an artist which also helps. It is the missus who runs the hostel and she first became inspired to run a hostel when she toured Britain as single so there is a lot of motivation :) Today, the farm has no animals, the last horses moved out in the early 90s, but the land belonging to the farm is still owned and worked by the family. The hostel is smack bang in the middle of the lovely fishing village Brantevik. It is an STF associated hostel which means check-in a couple of hours in the morning and afternoon only, but since the owners live next door, they are happy to let you in at other times too as long as you give them a ring in advance.

    Kiviks vandrarhem: Seaside hostel
  • Satisfaction:
  • Of all the hostels I have stayed in, this belongs to the favourites. The usual bunk beds in many rooms but as we had a family room we had a double bed and a nice sofa. The room also had wooden beams and a seaview. Our upstairs lounge had toys for the children to play with and was cosy in general. They also offer good deals from the hostel to various sights with Kivik Taxi, which is great if you haven't come by car. There are two hostels in Kivik but this is the seaside one, open most of the year.

You only need to cross the road and you're on Kivik beach where the hostel also has a sauna you can book.
