Where hills meet the sea

The coastal road between Ystad and Simrishamn is a must. Starting with Ale stenar, then Backåkra (see separate entry and this picture), Sandhammaren, Skillinge, Brantevik and finally, Simrishamn. Then again, the northern road to Stenshuvud, then Kivik, Brösarp...oh dear, lost in a picturesque village again! :-))) Walking around Skillinge with a friend who grew up there, listening to stories about fishing and shipping...seeing the headland of Stenshuvud appear for the first time...dreaming about farms I will never own.

Apple Market & Festival

Last weekend in September is the time for the annual apple market in Kivik, including special guided tours at the House of the Apple and at the orchards and merchants, concerts, apple tastings and the creating of a huge "portrait" made of 75 000 apples.

Several people arrange "trolling" tours from for instance Simrishamn harbour. Check at your local hotel or hostel which will usually have notes about available tours. Then come back to fillet your mega salmon in the harbour to the admiration of other tourists :-) Otherwise, ask the owner of this huge net requiring a tractor if he will take you on board...

Little harbour town

Simrishamn is a small town at the very southeastern coast of Skåne, the southern most state of Sweden. I had a very short stop here on my drive through Sweden to reach Finland by land.
In the vicinity of Simrishamn you should stop for the Stenhuvuds Nature Park aswell as for the Kings grave, a stone age grave hill in Kivik.

The entrance to the main fortress is impressive and you can already start to look for traps.

There is always a medieval market in summer with barbecue skewers, viking jewellery, medieval childrens costumes and such for sale as well as opportunities to try archery. Children can try jousting on a wooden horse...

...and of course there is music to match it all.
