One day for the skerries

by PerAsperaAdAstra

Hi guys, another question comes to mind: Do you have any ideas how to spend one day in the skerry islands? That is to say, which boat to catch from Stockholm to have a nice day?

Skerry islands? Don't you mean skärgården, archipelago?

Yes exactly.

Well, there are a few companies that have several tours - the most popular ones being:

- Strömma: http://www.stromma.se/en/Skargard/Stromma-Kanalbolaget/Day-cruises/
- Waxholmsbolaget: http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se/skargardstrafik_/en/batluff.aspx

You are probably already there now but my recommendation would be to go on the first possible morning tour with s/s Norrskär or s/s Storskär (see my Stockholm travelogue on steamships) which are my favourite ships and some of the oldest. You can just stay on board the whole journey and back. Depending on where they are going, you can also book a table in the restaurant for the return if you want to splash out and have a wondeful experience.

Otherwise, any bot to Sandhamn in the far out archipelago is a good bet which takes you way out and around.

Travel Tips for Stockholm

Work In Progress

by polardabar

Centralbron & Järnvägsbron have been worked on since last summer. If you were going from Stadshuset to Riddarholmen last summer, you would've been able to cross Centralbron. Unfortunetely there is still heavy work going around there, since they're adding extra four railways I think, so ease up the traffic towards Centralen. There is a way under the bridge of course, so you'll just have to go a bit farther & cross Vasabron. The construction is due to be done by the end of 2006. Staring at Stadshuset & Västerbron from Centralbron...

Walk around the seesides of...

by annbohlin

Walk around the seesides of Stockholm! There are many seesides, as Stockholm is build on a lot of Islands (I don't remember how many...) and WATER is one of Stockholms most charming assets!

Adding to that, the water is clean enough to bade in, and you will see people who catch salmon from bridges and docks in the middle of downtown Stockholm!

So please, don't forget so just relax and enjoy the beautiful views and the marvellous combination of green nature, water, old buildings and citylife - all at once! If you are just a tiny bit fond of nature... let a steemboat take you from downtown Stockholm (Nybrokajen or Strömkajen) into the archipelago! Go for walks around the different Islands, bring a picnic, go bading in a bay where there is no one else around... have dinner in the marvellous sunset... pick some blueberries and mushrooms...

A marvellous way to experience all this is to rent a boat. In Sweden you may anchor in most places, nature is free to enjoy for anyone!

This enormous freedom and luxury comes with lots of responsibility though! Please respect our beautiful nature - do not distroy anything, do not make fire on the smooth cliffs by the waterside, do not trespass private property, do not scare the animals, do not take birds eggs and so on! These are the rules of the game, that make it possible for us to enjoy our nature to the fullest!

Church Concerts

by Ken_Weaver

We checked local listings and found many live concerts to attend...for free! One Sunday evening we when to Sophia Krykan on Sodermalm and were treated to a classical choir concert. The 30 or so singers sounded like 130 singers in this Romanesque domed santuary

Enjoy the historical bath...

by Fiffi

Enjoy the historical bath called Centralbadet, on Drottninggatan. Here you soak in the water under old arches, take a quick shower in the small booth with colorful tiles. Then proceed to the jacuzzi and the sauna region with three different types of sauna and one tukish steam bath (the latter is mixed). If you want you can start it all with a workout on the machines in the small gym. On friday nights the bar in the jacuzzi area is likely to be crowded with fellow bathers in robes or towels. All for around 70–110 Swedish crowns! Enjoy a beer before going into the changing room getting prepared for a night out!

Stromming

by dmirebella

If you are not a fan for fish, this might put you off but I would suggest giving this a go anyhow. Stromming is a kind of local fish (don't ask me to which family type tho) - and is usually grilled and served on a bed of mash potatoes and lemon sauce - and perhaps dill.

Absolutely yummy - and can be found at most cafe's.

Otherwise, head towards Kungstradgarden - there is a large square and there is a mobile vendor there that serves stromming for a price somewhat cheaper than the cafe's - great stuff.
