worth purchasing the Stockholm Card?
We will be arriving in Stockholm pre-cruise and will have 2-3 days to visit the sights.
We will be staying at the Grande Hotel and don't know if it would be better to wait until we get to Stockholm to discuss sightseeing with the hotel concierge or to go out on our own?
Is Stockholm fairly easy to get around on your own with taxi, public transportation, etc?
Is English readily spoken in Copenhagen?
Again, my apologies for what might appear to be inane questions, but any answers/opinions would be very much appreciated!

Whether the Stockholm Card is worth or not depends on, mostly, if most of what you want to see is covered by it. Do the numbers and you be the judge.
Stockholm is very easy to get around in public transportation, taxi, etc. Taxis tho are rather expensive and traffic during peak hours is horrible so you're better off with public transportation (IMO). Also, some of the sights are within walking distance from Grand Hotel: The Old Town, Kungsträdgården, the island of Djurgården with Skansen, The Nordic and Vasa Museums, etc.
Everyone here speaks English, just like in Copenhagen, so no worries.

I did the maths and It makes great sense to take the card if you plan to do all the sight seeing there is to do! =)
The card site also says that If you visit the 2 museums a day the card pays for itself.
The card offers a free Historical Canal tour, worth 100++ SEK, well worth it according to me! =)

If you visit Stockholm and intend on visiting many attractions in a short amount of time, the Stockholm card is a good idea. It offers free admission to over 70 different sites, monuments, museums, and they give you a free guide book to take around with you.
It can last 24, 48 or 72 hours (of course the more hours you ask for the more expensive it will be.) Since I was under 17 last year, I got it for a MUCH lower price. It starts at $30 US.
A exellent indoor parking in the city center, just across the big shopping mall NK and close to Kungsträdgården and shopping mall Gallerian.

The history of Stockholm

German influence in the 14th century
In the Gamla Stan you can still see traces of the German influence in Stockholm. The German influence was caused by the Hanseatic League. During the 14th century trade increased, especially between German towns and Swedish port towns along the Baltic.
Sweden's trade was dominated by the Hanseatic League for 200 years, until the middle of the 16th century. During that time many German merchants moved to Stockholm. They got together in Saint Gertrud's cottage. In 1580 the guild cottage was rebuilt into a church. The church still exists and this is the Tyska kyrkan or German Church in the Gamla Stan.
In the picture you can see restaurant Zum Franziskaner (Skeppsbron 44), a rustic German style bierstube.
Cross the Centralbron into the mostly residential suburb of Sodermalm. This view of the Centrolbron and Gamla Stan is from the northern cliffs of Sodermalm. It was only a short distance from the hostel I stayed in, which you can see in the bottom right of the pic. I stayed in the white boat. Next to that is the restaurant and behind the trees is the original hostel boat which is red.
We met very few Swedish people in Stockhom who didn't speak English. In the B&B where we stayed, our hostess and all her family spoke excellent English, and it was a similar story in the shops, bars and restaurants which we visited. I had tried to learn a few Swedish phrases but there was little need for it anywhere.
