stockholm on a shoestring

Re: stockholm on a shoestring

Stockholm / Sweden, indeed Scandinavia, is not the best place for a shoestring budget. Don't see where you're from but Scandinavia the most expensive place I've been in Europe.
To make the most of it, eat your main meal at lunch times rather than dinner times for value. Also, if you do splurge a little it's better value. The kind of burger and fries stuff can be three or four times UK prices, but for smoked salmon and champagne end of the market the differential is less.
Local spirit notably O P Anderson aquavit less expensive than imports - of course - true of all local produce.
That's my best shot I'm afraid!

Here is what I usually do to manage in Stockholm on low budget:

- rent an appartment instead of a hotel room (you can get a private apartment from around SEK 700/night, while hotels start aroung SEK 1000) - you can find booking agencies here:
http://www.visitstockholm.com/en/Stay/Tips/Bed--Breakfast/

- buy food in a supermarket, and eat it in the apartment (if it has a kitchen, you can even prepare simple meals, e.g. warm up some Swedish meatballs you can get in the supermarket)

- you can see much of Stockholm by walking, without paying entrance fees (great areas are the old town called Gamla Stan, Södermalm, Kungsholmen and the vast park on Djurgarden island) - check out my tips on some great walking routes

- if you still want to see many places with an entrance fee, buy a Stockholm Card, and try to fit in as much of those places into one day as possible :)

- catch public transportation from Arlanda airport instead of the express train or bus (express bus costs SEK 100, express train costs SEK 240 one-way, but if you buy a weekly pass for SEK 260, you can use that to get into central Stockholm by local bus+train, and then for unlimited local trips for a week within and around Stockholm)

The trip to Stockholm still won't be very cheap, but you can save quite some money this way.

I don't think you can do Stockholm on a real budget, all the Nordic countries need some amount of money that you can afford to spend, transportation, accommodation and food cost more than the rest of Europe. However, it is still possible to manage if you buy some food from supermarket and maybe sometimes eat is small ethnic restaurants, Turkish Kebab is usually cheap. Of course any alcohol drinks are expensive and by the way, I don't think private apartment if a good deal for single person, a Hostels will charge you only 200 SEK per bed for a night and if you travel alone, that is the best way to met other travelers and make some travel friends. Meeting a local that will host you for couple of days will solve your budget even more ;-)

You're right, for 1 person a hostel bed is definitely the cheapest alternative.

Travel Tips for Stockholm

Internet access

by TimSimpson

Internet access in Stockholm is not plentiful nor particularly cheap. Indeed hotel internet is quite expensive. However at the Central train station in the one hall are about 20 workstations [July 2010] for which you gain access from a ticket machine in either SEK/3 Euros or credit card which is better i.e. it issues a ticket. Unfortunately the internet access there is not good because, presumably, server congestion during the working day. The good news is that some of the '7-11' shops also have internet access from the same network, so take your ticket there and use what you need - the network keeps your credit and advises you what you are using whilst online.

Enjoy the Scandinavian way of...

by DanielF

Enjoy the Scandinavian way of life. Hard weather conditions made of Scandinavians a tough people that got a reputation for its cruelty and courage in wars. But nowadays Sweden is one of the most prosperous societies in the world and Scandinavians have become a very raffinated, stylish and sophisticated people. For this reason, Stockholm is nowadays a world city that offers plenty of interesting activities for citizens and visitors.

First of all, the location of the city is so beautiful and photogenic that the simple fact of strolling in the city center is a real pleasure. The city is composed of a group of islands in the middle of a fjord-like lake near the sea. It is said that there are more than 1000 islands in the Stockholm’s archipelago. So wherever you go, you will be surrounded by water, green areas and fine architecture. Scandinavians are usually sports lovers, and the city provides a lot of opportunities for sailing, jogging, cycling, skating… And in the coldest days of the hard winter, when the lake freezes, even ice-skating.

Secondly, as I said before, Stockholmans are really stylish and elegant. Furthermore, I would say that there are a lot of “design-victims” among them. That means that if you are a shoppaholic, you will have a great time here.

Finally, the cultural offer is huge and varied. Swedes are very proud of their culture and cultivate it to a large extend. But at the same time, they are open-minded people, always eager to learn new things from other cultures. Sailing in the lake is really pleasant, so make sure your friends in Stockholm have a small, comfortable boat for enjoying the city from the water.

Stockholm Tip

I love fountains, and this one is fabulous!! When I was in Germany, I took pictures of every fountain I saw (which led for some boring stories once I got back home), and when I saw this one, I simply counldn't resist! I have not yet seen it at night, but I have seen pics of it at night on other people's pages, and it looks amazing!

Wall paintings at T-centralen

by vec

At the city subway station T-Centralen you can find this wall paintings showing shadows of the people building the subway station. The painting is located near the escalators between the blue line platform and the green and red lines platform.

Record Stores

by bottleofdoom

This is me outside the closed record store, Frizzle. Mellotronen is another record
store right next to it & they are on Gamla Stan. Address: 16-14 Kakbrinken.
I wanted very much to purchase the new Backyard Babies record. The absolute best record store we went to was SOUND POLLUTION in Gamla Stan.
Address: Stora Nygatan 18
