First Hotel Amaranten is situated in a walking distance to the city centre, nevertheless the subway is right at the hotel's main entrance (even if it's raining you won't get wet).
It's a nice hotel if you want to explore the city and the breakfast was nice.
Be careful about your expectations, the pictures you can see in the site, particularly the lobby are nice, but the rooms need a restyling and the bathrooms are very bad, small and very old. I couldn't believe when there weren't warm water in the last day I stayed there. In the reception suggested to use a shared bathroom at other floor, it's not normal for a 4 star's hotel. I noticed that they are making some repairs in the hotel, maybe if you go there in the future, it should be better. If you can, choose other place to stay in the nearer future.
Directions: Walking distance (about 15 min.) to central station (connection to the Aralanda Airport)
We are taking a 16-day Scandinavian tour with Grand Circle Travel beginning September 10, 2008, but we have booked our own airline travel. What is the most economical transportation for us to get from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport to the First hotel Amaranten in downtown Stockholm? Also, what is the admission fee for the Vassa Museum?
My spouse had a business trip to Stockhlom last June and we took the Arlanda Express into downtown. It is easy to catch from the lower level of the airport and is a nice view of the country on the 45 minutes ride in. The central train station is real "central" and your hotel shouldn't be a short walk or taxi ride. We were at the SAS Raddison, which was about a 100 feet from the platform. You will find plenty of taxis at the end of the platform. I really can't tell you how much as her company gave us passes.
110SEK for the bus ticket (about 17 USD)
Check out www.sthlmoutback.se for a nice view of the Swedish country side
Have a nice trip!
Best Regards Nils
I recently did this piece that you might find helpful. I specifically addressed getting into town from the airport:

Vasa museum is about $12 - restaurant there has a nice view, too, for lunch -- or go to Blå Porten nearby for atmosphere!
Tickets on Arlanda Express train easy to get at airport, and there's also a bus, which isn't as fast, but cheaper, and winds up in heart of town.
