A hostel with a night in a boat

With finding out how busy Stockholm was the other day when phoning for a budget bed I appreciate that paying £25 for a bed in a dorm of 6 without breakfast and without a towel or sheets as being a privilege!

My old Lonely Planet says that Stockholm has got the best deal hostel bed prices in Scandanavia. So I dont know about that... but the emphasis will have to be book ahead to book the lower prices! I got to see how easy you can end up without a bed and having to say yes to a hostel single room paying £55 without your own bathroom or breakfast still!

So before this becomes a danger and warning tip which I think it should be!, but otherwise its a necessary attachment to where you decide to stay! af Chapman is the hostel boat and Hostel Schleppman is its dryland site hostel adjacent to the anchorage and I booked about 9am and got 2nights stay but not on the boat as only one of the 2 nights was available. The 6 bedded dorm horror was subdivided by a wonderful and easy innovation with a wall and door in between a block of 4 bunks and the 2 bunks. this was great the first night when the entire family of 5 stayed in 'their' room and I ended up with mine on my own.

The place was really clean on arrival in the afternoon. Tho by mid morning when a cleaning session mustve been due it was due! but otherwise the place is clean and modern looking and user friendly.
The breakfast is 65 kroner - about £6 for a wide ranging buffet breakfast. Well worth taking if at least one morning as a breakfast and lunch start to your day.

YH af Chapman

I have stayed in this unique youth hostel twice: in 1984 and in 2006 and both times it was quite an adventure!

This youth hostel has two accomodation facilities: you can sleep either on the boat or in the main building right across the street. Sleeping on the boat is fun, but you just may not be claustrophobic - everything is very narrow plus they only have bunk beds there! No single rooms available, double rooms or dormitories with 6 or 10 beds.

You can rent linnens and towels and can book extra breakfast (see my restaurant tips!), the reception is open 24/7 and the staff is very friendly!

Unique Quality: The location is the absolute +++ plus of this accomodation: right across from Gamla Stan and within walking distance to most of Stockholm's sights!

The af Chapman might be towed away for renovation from August 2006 - so check that out beforehand!

Af Chapman, a great experience

Youth hostel on a boat

The Af Chapman is a huge boat placed solidly on the bottom of the water just beside Skeppsholmen. The hostel is member of the swedish youth hostel federation, STF.

On the land just beside the boat is another youth hostel if you prefer solid ground under your feet.

I have never actually stayed at the hostel but I would love to some day as it is very centrally located, close to the water and has a splendid view over Söder and the old town. If you walk to the other side of Skeppsholmen you'll be overlooking the island of Djurgården with the famous Vasa museum and Gröna Lund amusement park as prominent landmarks

Stay on a ship

Well, the cabins are small, as they are on ships, but look at it! A very special hostel. Breakfast can be had on deck and you are in the middle of Stockholm...

Intersting place to stay...

A few days, but on a ship-hostel. Intersting place to stay, if you like new experiences...

It is located in the Skeppsholmen (or Shiphome) island, in front of Gamla Stan and near the main city places in downtown. Good mobility.

If you want something special, book yourself there...

Boattime lullabyes

I didn't actually stay here in the "af Chapman" but it seems like a great idea. It is just like any regular hotel but you are on a boat. There are others like her in Stockholm if you are interested. I stayed at the Columbus Hotel which is an upscale B&B. It was totally perfect for me. I was by myself and I had my personal room. It was great. The staff was impeccable and very accomodating, and helpful.

Youth hostel

This youth hostel is situated in the centre on a small island named "Skeppsholmen" and offers a terrific view on Gamla Stan (the wonderful old town) and the Royal Palace. Very near to every signt.
It is composed of two parts : "Skeppsholmen", a beautiful building from the 18th century with 152 beds and the old sailing ship "Af Chapman" with 136 beds in cabins for two to ten people. This is the most beautiful youth hostel I've ever seen.

Unique Quality: Breakfast is served if you pay a supplement (it worths it, great choice, delicious).
Laundry facilities, kitchen available, lockers.
Sleeping bags allowed. Bed sheets for rent.

All aboard for Stokholm's hostal

This hostal is aboard the ship af Chapman which is now anchored permanently in the harbour. You will literally be rocked to sleep.
