    An unacceptable mistake

    by

We have just stayed at the Best Western Hotel Bentleys, Stockolm for three nights. On the first night about 9 p.m. in the evening our door was openen by an unknown person, who apparently had been assigned the same room number and a key card. I called the front desk and within 10 minutes staff arrived with a reprogrammed key. It was a mistake, but of course totally unacceptable to us. We expect our rooms to be safe from intruders.

Except for that the room and breakfast was OK for the money - this is Stockholm after all. Location excellent for us, in the quiet end of a main shopping street with plenty of restaurants in the neighbourhood. Public transport a bit too far away, but there are two metro stations within half a kilometer.

    Directions: Norrmalm District

Breakfast not far from Stadshuset

by manuna

Can you recommend a cafe not far from Stadhuset which is open at 8 a.m (8:30) and reasonable price. We do not need anything special a cup of coffe (hot chocolate), backery will be enough.

From Simone's (Sim1) Stockholm page I once read that "Robert's Coffee" is a chain which make very good coffee. I did have coffee there and it was goo indeed. Here the locations in Stockholm:

From Stadhuset the nearest one would be across the bridge at Centralstation.

There's also another chain called Wayne's Coffee and most other small cafeterias and/or bakeries usually have a breakfast menu consisting of a sandwich, coffee and/or juice for a fixed price (how much it is depends on what they offer and the place).

There is a 7-Eleven not that far away along Hantverkargatan (starts by the City Hall). Otherwise the Central station has things open at that time.

Travel Tips for Stockholm

Statues

by sue_stone

The Swedes seem to love a good statue - the city was littered with them!!

I don't actually know what they all represented, but took photos of several that we came across. Perhaps I need to do some research and update this tip with more details... All I can say is that they were all very nice looking and clean statues, that look darn fine in a photo when taken with the magnificent blue sky as the back-drop!!

Go off the busy streets of the old town, and to the outer areas of the island. There you can truly get a feel of the quaint charm of the multicolored, tall buildings. On the main street in the old town, there are two movie perfect looking candy stores. In there, they sell these chocolate balls, that are absolutley delicious. I have looked for a recipe for them ever since I returned, to no avail. The closest thing I have found, is you can purchase them at an IKEA store, if you ever get to one.

You can rent a bike in summer time to pedal around Stockholm and see many areas in one afternoon. Bike rental located near Djurgarden and the Vasa museum, which is also not to be missed! A 400 year old Viking ship in near perfect shape that will bring out the sailor in everyone.

Norrmalmstorg

by vec

Norrmalmstorg is the most valuable street in the Swedish version of the monopoly game. But on the real Norrmalmstorg you don't need to pay a fortune for a hotel, just because you happened to get there.

Here you find a lot of fancy shops, and often some kind of street market. It's also from here the old tram line to Djurgården starts.

Equal rights

by tini58de

Just recently I saw a program on equal rights in Sweden here on German TV and I also read something in one of the official pamphlets:

parents in Sweden have the right to spend the first 240 days with their newborn child - and 48% of the men make use of this! And indeed, we did see quite a few fathers with their little ones in a buggy walking through town!

The funniest sign of this "equal right" was a sign on the men's toilet - a sign for parents and children (diaper change). Before I had always seen it only in the ladies' area!!!

On the other hand women take over in other areas as well, such as traditionally male professions like busdrivers or soldiers.

Interesting, indeed!
