Visit for pleasure, time flexible

by iheartcjs

Hi, my good friend is in Sweden until the spring. I am planning to visit him for a week to two weeks any time from Dec 11 to January 14th, but not over Christmas. New years is fine. I know its going to be freezing, but its when I can go. Is there an airline that provides cheap flights from the States, especially St. Louis because of the time of the year? Is it better to buy tickets a head of time or wait til the last minute? I would like to see some sights but mostly I am going to see my friend, so does anyone have ideas on how to save money while I am there? Thank you so much!

You intend to travel in a peak period, so airfares will not be cheap on any airline.

I didn't realize travel would be at its peak in the winter, I assumed more people would want to visit Sweden in the Summer. I have heard their winters are -15(F) below and colder, I am from Missouri where single digits is insanely cold. I would like to save money by figuring out where a cheap place to stay is. Are there hostels for women? I have seen some but they are mostly for males, but they seem the cheapest route. I may be staying with a family my relatives know, so this may not be an issue.

Mostly for males? There are loads of unisex hostels in Sweden. Check http://www.svenskaturistforeningen.se/ or www.svif.se for the IYHA and privately organised ones respectively. The Af Chapman boat is very nice and central and Fridhemsplan not bad at all I think (I stay with family myself).

Sweden can be done on a budget since there are often lunch deals in restaurants (including coffee and salad etc.) and there are plenty of fast food places which are cheaper than your average restaurant (just don't expect American sized burgers in Europe, haha!) If you are a student and hold an international student card there are also some discounts.

Climate is relative but we can have mild or cold winters, there is no way of telling which we will have. Last winter was quite long and cold but before then there has been more snow-less winters too. Still, it can get windy along the sea and to dress in layer upon layer is the trick, as well as wearing hat and gloves. Then you'll be fine.

Summer is indeed when people want to go to Scandinavia, but Christmas and New Year is a generally big travel period anywhere in the western world I'd say, as people want to go and visit friends and family when they have a few extra days off, and when there is holidays to celebrate. The run up to Christmas is nice in Stockholm with hot chocolate and mulled wine in cafés in the Old Town medieval cellars, and loads of Christmas lights (although again not much by American standards I guess). Christmas is then a quiet family affair and at New Year people come out again. New Year's Eve is fantastic in Stockholm with all its hills and water everywhere.

With one exception: July everything is open and when school starts end of August "everything" closes. This is slowly starting to change but due to our small population it doesn't make sense to have countryside local museums and boat trips (for instance) open.

Travel Tips for Stockholm

Go see the islands!

by bbh

If you only have a day in Stockholm, take the open-top bus tour to see the highlights of the city. You'll be impressed with how many parks and how much water there is every where! And yes, Old Town (Gamla stan) is a must see as well.
But if you have two days then make sure you spend one of them taking a boat out in to the archipelago. It is so relaxing and gorgeous! You can take an old steam boat on an hour's trip to "the capital" of the archipelago: Waxholm. Walk around in the nice little, quaint town, have some lunch and some ice cream and then take the boat back to the city.
Or you can island-hop on the many boats that traffic the many, many islands (around 20000 all in all) and stay at hotels or youth hostels. This would, however, require even some more time in Stockholm. And why not? This city is too gorgeous to pass by. You must come and see it at least once! Summer evenings spent by the water somewhere. Preferrably at a caf?, watching the sunset.

Stockholm is both intense...

by JohanSE

Stockholm is both intense activity and relaxed. Take time and walk around. Experience more of the town than just City. 10 minutes from downtown Stockholm you find entire blocks of 18th century houses. Take a stroll the Old Town (Gamla Stan), stay there and listen. If you listen careful enough you might hear the people of the 17th century whisper in your ear...

Neighbourhoods: Gamla Stan

by Maline

Gamla Stan is south of Norrmalm and you get there by crossing one of the bridges. One suggestion is going down the street of Drottninggatan and the walk via the small island of Helgeandsholmen, that hosts the parliament building. (See pic)
Gamla Stan ("Old Town") is the site of the original town. The first mention of the name "Stockholm" was in a letter by king Birger jarl in the year 1252, so last year (2002) the city celebrated its 750th anniversary.
Gamla stan is a place to walk slowly through. Many narrow passages and old style buildings in this part of town. Also, the Royal Castle is here.

City Hall

by Bregman

Visit the city hall. Here you can take the tour and see, amongst other, the hall where the Nobel prize banquet is held.

When visiting, do not forget to take the lift to the top of the tower. From up there you have a magnificent view of Gamla Stan.

"Hey Hey!"

by marcfromburlington

I just loved the fact that when lined up for something in a store or a McDonald's you're almost always greeted with a cute "Hey Hey!" form the person at the register.

Fight the urge to answer back with "Hey Hey!" - they'll think you speek Swedish. Answering back with a "Hey Hey HEYYYYYY?!?" will produce even worse results. :)

I'm just kidding of course, but if you do answer back with a "Hey Hey!", no matter how cute it is, they'll think you're Swedish and if you don't know any you'll be promptly lost from there on in.
