Unusual hotel

I slept in Langholmen hotel,Stockholm August 1996 so this info might be little old... anyway, I stayed there 2 nights because my work sent me and my colleagues to a weekend course in Stockholm.

Langholmen is unusual, because it have been a prison before. The prison closed down some years ago, and is now a hotel. The prison is from 18th century and closed 1975. There is a museum in the hotel where you can learn more about the prison.

Overall it's a good and clean hotel. The rooms are small but have high roofs. (Same as prison rooms was before). The rooms are clean with toilet, shower and tv in the room.
The doors to the hotelrooms are still same as the prison doors. I thought they would be heavy and hard to open, but they wasn't. The doors was surprisingly easy to open, but they only looks heavy.

It was a fun experience to sleep in a ex-prison!

Unique Quality: Was a prison before, now hotel.

Youth hostels?

by scotsgirl

I think I'm going to Stockholm tomorrow for a few days. Going by myself. Can you recommend the best youth hostel to stay in? (best in terms of money, location and friendly people). Thanks! L

Hi,my daughters stayed at the Langholmen youth hostel and loved it. They've since recommended this place to many of their friends and everybody said it's great. It's a former prison and you sleep in the former cells. There is also a hotel at the same location. The staff speaks English. It is a very popular place, so book early.

Yes, it's a great place! ;) Having said that, we have snow storms in Sweden right now and Långholmen might not be the best for public transport then since you rely on buses to take you to the underground, alternatively, a walk uphill in the slush to Skanstull underground.

Try this one, also on the south side: www.zinkensdamm.com

Thanks for your advice, folks! I'm just back from Stockholm. I ended up staying at the Rygerfjord Boat Hotel/Hostel which worked out really well as it has a reasonable location only requiring a 10 minute walk to reach the old town or Sodermalm, there were plenty of friendly travellers there and the staff were good too. However I would probably think twice about staying on a boat in winter again... the cabins were freezing! A couple of tips for others looking for a place to stay: this hostel is spread over two boats. The main boat is warm and nicely decorated. The other boat is cold and a bit dilapitated. And the only difference between a budget room and a hotel-standard room is the addition of a very tiny, very cold bathroom inside the room. However the communal bathroom facilities are fine. Oh, also that sheets are provided.

Their website is: http://www.rygerfjord.se/
