City tour on foot + metro + lunch/coffee break

by Muscovite

Trying to make an itinerary for an independent tour on the first day in Stockholm

Old town and the square with a fountain and lovely houses – there is a café there, does it break one’s budget?
Then the place in Sodermalm Sjalen recommended – Asegatan?
And back, before it turns completely dark and frosty.

Starting from Regeringsgatan via Drottninggatan, then bridges – any suggestions!

Hi, You must take a trip to the Kaknas TV Tower, east of Skansen. It offers absolutely breathtaking views of Stockhol & it's islands.

It's easily reached by bus, then you have to walk through some woods.

Maybe you mean Åsögatan? That's a street tho.

In my personal opinion, the restaurants and cafés in the Old Town are more expensive than the ones in the city or in Södermalm.

If you walk to the Old Town from Drottninggatan you'll pass 2 bridges.

That's right - Åsögatan, haven't got Swedish keyboard -)

Did I recommend something in Åsögatan??? :)

"For example there is a street called Asögatan there with almost 300 year-old red wooden houses. "

Sorry, I probably took you for somebody else :)
Although unlikely, as it is on Sodermalm :)
I've got it all copied and saved, but without authors :(

Now I'm intrigued. Parts of the most ugly buildings you can find on Söder are in the Åsögatan area - although it's a long street so the eastern end is more intersting.

Fjällgatan/Katarina Church quarters, and Monteliusgatan are some areas with nice red wooden houses left. The kind that were ones for poor people and are now gentrified beyond belief.

I had to search for it, and it is indeed not my tip but bazsar79. Just as I thought, he means the little side streets not too far from Fjällgatan which cross Åsögatan in its eastern end and would be nice to take in along with Fjällgatan itself (or Fåfängan but it only opens 9 January again and in winter the path up to the café is probably icy): http://www.fafangan.se/foto.htm

Oh, I see!

Thank you very much for digging into it; changed and saved :)
Hope it won’t be too cold when I finally get there :)

Another thing - if January 06 is a public holiday, does it mean that everything is closed?
Nothing can suprise me after I found out that in France buses do not run on May 01, as they are powered by working class.

6th January is a holiday, some buildings are closed or have other opening hours. The public transport runs as an ordinary Sunday.

Thanks,
I guess I'll head to Skansen then :)

P.S.
I don't think Kunliga Operan is open for the public in daytime otherwise than for guided tours?

Re: City tour on foot + metro + lunch/coffee break

by marielexoteria

The English version of Operan says:
"Saturdays and Sundays at 13 pm
The main entrance opens up at 12-13 pm for ticket"

http://www.operan.se/In-English/Guided-tours-of-the-Opera-House/

But the Swedish version says they have these visits during summer.

Re: City tour on foot + metro + lunch/coffee break

I believe Skansen is a disappointment!

Go to Kaknas TV Tower instead. Far more to see & admire, for a fraction of the cost!!

Re: City tour on foot + metro + lunch/coffee break

by Muscovite

I know, Durfun, you are a fan of Kaknastornet, but it’s way too far off any T-bana

Re: City tour on foot + metro + lunch/coffee break

by Durfun

Sure, no T-bana, but a short & scenic bus ride instead ;-)

Re: City tour on foot + metro + lunch/coffee break

to Kaknäs: Bus 69K (not to be confused with 69 because it won't go all the way) from T-centralen.

See, easy-peasy :-)

Travel Tips for Stockholm

The Vikings

by MikeAtSea

Sweden has a rich history and the conquering of parts of Europe and exploration of the world. Hence this T-shirt caught my eye whilst exploring Stockholm – It is of the Vikings World Tour – some interesting dates of the arrival of the Vikings around the globe.

When you are there, make sure...

by Belgian_Guy

When you are there, make sure you take a ferry from Djurgarden to the old city center of Ganlan Stan! A lot of people do that everyday for work! The open air park of Skansen (Djurgarden) shows the old houses of Sweden and also a zoo and is very worth visiting! Without doubt the beauty of the Archipelago! We went for sailing and camped on one of the small islands, this is allowed as long as you do not damage nature! There was no darkness so the picture below is taken at 3h00 after midnight!

Strandvägen stroll

by Sjalen

Strandvägen is one of Stockholm's most expensive addresses including in Monopoly and it is not hard to see why. Here, one majestic stone townhouse is next to the other all along the waterfront and having an apartment here means eating breakfast to the tune of steam ship whistles and with a view across to Djurgården and to Söder further away across the water. When there has been financial scandals in the country, you bet they involved someone giving their son or daughter a studio here for next to nothing whilst the rest of society struggles to find a first hand contract in a suburb.
A stroll here can be biting cold in winter, but still very nice. In summer, it is the easiest way to stroll to Djurgården with all its attractions, although there are buses and in summer also a vintage tram line along it.

My giraffes

by Sjalen

Since I collect giraffes, one of my absolute favourite Stockholm scenes is this one - the giraffe cranes on Beckholmen. Off the beaten path but you will see them if you sail to Stadsgårdskajen or Skeppsbron / Nybrokajen and you can walk there easily if out strolling on Djurgården even if then you cannot enter the wharf itself, just check out all the cool houseboats.

Icecream lovers!

by agustath

The Swedish people love icecream and consume on average 17 kilos per person per year. That is a lot! And they eat icecream, summer and winter. Café Jarntorget is supposed to offer very good icecream, but we were not able to go there. Instead we tried another place inside the small "mall" close to Sergelstorg (can not remember the name of neither the "mall" nor the icecrem vendor. But it was exstremly good!)
