The seas, coasts and shipyards has inspired the interiors and a 9000 liter aquarium adorns the lobby. Simpel funcional design is everywhere. Short walking distance to shopping, restaurants and entertainment. 1st June, 2002, Nordic Hotels and Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi opened the world’s first permanent ice bar, right in the heart of Stockholm. The interior is kept at below zero temperature -5°C all year round. All of the interior fittings, including the glasses, are made of pure, clear ice from the Torne River in northern Sweden. Very stylish large modern independent 4-star hotel, next to the main station. The building is actually a former police station, although you wouldn't know it given the way it has been converted. The large lobby has a good sized bar, a huge aquarium, and the world's only year-round ice bar (very cool!). The standard rooms are smallish ("compact"), but very comfortable and nicely furnished. Good quality breakfast, and friendly staff. Also, it is right by the entrance to Stockholm Central Station and the Arlanda Express platforms, so is very handy if you are travelling by train or going to/from the airport. Rack rates here are expensive, but they often have special offers (eg at weekends) which can make it a much more affordable option. Most recently in December 2004 we paid SEK 1,190/night for a superior double room, inc breakfast. NB: The "cheapest" small rooms at this hotel are very small and have no windows.

If you're visiting Stockholm and are looking for a centrally located, convenient and reasonably priced (does such a thing exist in Stockholm?!) hotel, then you could do a lot worse than The Nordic Sea Hotel. If you're arriving in Stockholm by air, then this is an extremely conveniently located hotel - it is situated a 1 minute walk from the Arlanda Express terminal that connects the city with the airport. The hotel itself is very impressive with stylish decor throughout, friendly staff and well furnished rooms. The price varies according on the type of room that you opt for. I chose a small single (the cheapest available!) and ended up in a very small, windowless room. However, it was clean and comfortable and possessed all the amenities that I required, so no complaints! Don't be put off by this! If you're prepared to spend more, then you'll be able to get a nice, spacious, palatial double room. Breakfast is included in the price and, quite frankly, it is absolutely brilliant!! Each morning I would start with a bowl of cornflakes, followed by a bowl of strawberry yoghurt. Then maybe a croissant with jam. Then I'd be onto the bacon, eggs, sausages, mushrooms, toast.......and maybe a couple of cakes to round it off nicely! :-)
The prime factor for me deciding to stay at this hotel, though, was the fact that it houses the world's first permanent "Ice Bar". On the ground floor of the hotel, there is a bar that is constructed completely from ice! For a hefty entrance fee (but definitely worth it!), you will be provided with a large thermal coat, reminiscent of the type worn by Eskimos, and a pair of gloves. You then pass through a door into what is effectively a large freezer. The internal walls of the bar are constructed from ice (giving an igloo effect), the tables are made from ice and the bar itself is sheer ice. Your chosen flavour of vodka will be served to you in a hollowed out block of ice - very refreshing! Even if you choose not to stay at this hotel, be sure to make a trip to the Ice Bar as non-guests are welcome to drink in the bar. I booked this hotel via: www.destination-stockholm.com. In doing so, I received a free "Stockholm a la Carte" card for the duration of my stay, and a free guidebook to the city's attractions.
