Right at Stockholm Central

This is a very nice hotel just a few meters from Stockholm central station, which is a great place to catch the subway, the train or the airport express train to Arlanda Airport. I usually stay here when I am Stockholm on business. They have free broadband connection, but breakfast is not included in the price. So if you want to get breakfast on the hotel, it is an extra 125 SEK. There is a fitness centre with a pool in connection to the hotel, but it is not included on normal room rates.

Unique Quality: Extremely central location.

An OK hotel

After having booked this hotel, I was told that the Sheraton next door was much better!! Too late! I was really wondering what I would find but at the end it was not that bad!

Located just close to central station, the building from outside doesn't look that exciting. At least, this is not an usual tower but a relatively low building. The first thing you notice when getting in is a big open lobby integrating the bar.

The check-in is quickly done and I can have access to my room. I have seen better one but I have also seen much worse. It's relatively spacious and the bed is quite comfortable (I was dead and would have probably slept on a wooden plank as well).

Unique feature, a huge mirror in front of the bed... funny to see you sleeping in this case. You may find some other usages to it (even with twin beds ;-)

The bathroom was rather small, shower in the bathroom, but everything was functional.
Wireless Internet access is also provided for free.

As usual, the breakfast was a buffet. Far from exceptional, beans and smoked salmon were not even present, it was however decent.

There was also a gym with a swimming pool but I haven't got the time to explore it.

All in all, it was an ok experience but next time I'll definitely try the Sheraton!

Sweden's best loaction for a hotel

Radisson SAS Viking's location is excellent. Train ride from airport drops you off right at the hotel. It's a five minute walk to Gamla Stan. The rooms are ok, not as nice as I thought they'd be and more in line with an average hotel in the states. Service people are very friendly and helpful. Peculiar set ups for showering, not consisten in all the rooms.

Royal Viking

Just a block away from the Arlanda Express station, the Royal Viking could not have a more accessible location.

Although the rooms may be a bit small (at least by American standards), the Royal Viking more than makes up for it with other amenities. Plus, the staff is extremely pleasant.

Unique Quality: There is a gym and pool in the basement, a bar with a great city view on the top floor, and tasty breakfast. The restaurant in the hotel, Fisk, provides the room service food which is excellent. Rooms have wireless internet access and the business center on the ground floor has high speed internet.

good location

I've stayed here twice - once in the 90's and again in 04.

Good breakfasts, and good food & drink in the bar. Very convenient for Arlanda airport as it's right by the station (high speed trains give a quick reliable transfer).

By 04 the rooms were looking a little tired and in need of upgrade.

Location is great for anything in the city centre, and you have the central station next door so you can jump on the metro/suburban trains.

Unique Quality: Club sandwiches in bar.

Not great, but...

Fantastic looking from the lobby, this hotel is 30 seconds walk away from the Central Station, and is handy for shopping and walks to the Old Town.
However, the rooms aren't great (unless I was just unlucky) as they are quite small and not very well kept... obviously this may not apply if you can afford a suite!
Very basic rooms, though not exactly expensive so not so bad. Bit TOO CLOSE to the station, if you prefer some peace and quiet!

Recommended if you want an easy place to get to, near the station, shops, some restaurants, etc. Free internet is a bonus too!

Unique Quality: There is a gym and swimming pool, but only the business class guests get it for free. Free wireless internet access is a plus point (for me at least!)

Living in the City Centre

It was comfortable and pleasant. The usual high standards of the Rezidor SAS hotel chain were evident.

Unique Quality: It is located next toi the main railway station and a short walk from the central shopping area.

Take him to the smorgasbord at the grand hotel. Suprisingly affordable and delicious!!!

The Gondola Bar might be an ideal place for celebrations - it has legendary views over the city.

Re: birthday in s-holm

Both are good suggestions. The Gondola is in a historic landmark in the shape of an old iron lift with a "bridge" and the restaurant is on the bridge with a great city view. I have a picture of it on my Stockholm page. It is run by one of the best chefs in Sweden and quite expensive but worth the money if you can afford it. Their site is unfortunately only in Swedish but if you click your way around the "Gondolen" pages you can see the look of it: http://www.eriks.se/

Grand has the advantage of being near the boats to the archipelago. Very romantic if you have a bit of sunshine and are dressed for April weather. Especially with the more old fashioned steam ships. Just a trip to Vaxholm or something near the city maybe...

A trip up the City Hall tower also gives you a great view as does a walk along the heights of Söder - the southern city centre island. There you will also find many relaxed pubs as opposed to the more expensive ones downtown.

Finally, Old Town has lots of romance (and tourists)...you will see it automatically as it's eye catching. :-)

To get a really nice view of Stockholm, try the Sky bar.
It's a roof-top bar on the top of Radisson SAS Royal Viking hotel, next to the railway station.
The view up there is gorgeous.
Unfortunately no food is available, only drinks and snacks, but everything is surprisingly affordable.
Open most days from 16-24, just enter the hotel through the main entrance and you find the elevator to the right.

How relaxed is their dress code Jacob? I've never tried it but why not next time my parents will babysit when we're there! :-)))

Re: birthday in s-holm

I was there last summer and at least at that time the dress code was pretty relaxed.
As long as you are properly dressed I doubt they say anything. The bar is connected to the hotel so many guests stop by for a drink before going to bed, and they weren't too dressed up.
Still this was in the summer, in the middle of the week, maybe it's different around weekends.

I'm spending my 26th birthday in Stockholm later this year! Looks like it should be a good trip, will keep an eye on this thread.
