Arriving in Stockholm by cruise ship

by azz8206

Hello all, I have a couple of questions. First question is, How far is the cruise ship port from the center of Stockholm? Second is, I'll be in Stockholm for about 8 hours. Which type of transportation is my best option in a short time? Would it be better taking a hop on hop off bus or using the tram lines or just using the regular buses? Thanks for the help.

One more question. Are there any buses, trams or hop on hop off buses in front of the cruise ship port? Thanks again.

it might of course depend on the (size of the) ship, but according to my experience ships dock within walking-distance to the main attractions in the centre of town.
10-15 min to walk to the castle or to the ferry taking you to the WASA-museum, that is certainly the best attraction for visitors.

there might be sponsored buses by department-stores, but they will take you to the shopping-area mainly and walking from there is not any closer to the tourist-places!

I would suggest that you take the 'Bridges of Stockholm' tour. This boat tour takes just about 2 hours and it allows you to see this beautiful city by boat. There is a PA system on board and also a small kitchen which serves coffee etc.
If you want to take good photos then do go to the semi-open deck at the back.
This way you'll see and enjoy a different view of this city. Remember, though, that your 8 hours may end up being more like 7 hours because of time to disembark/embark.
I guess that you're going to St.Petersburg too. The canal and River Neva tour there is a must! You see many terrific sights and appreciate the breeze if it's a hot day. Be warned: the champagne that is free is awful!
Do look at my travel pages if you would like to see photos or need more information. Of course, there are lots of other VT members who have also written great pages too!

Depends on which cruise line you are with, as there is no cruise ship port in Stockholm. Some dock at Stadsgårdskajen, some in Frihamnen (the free trade harbour) and some way out in Nynäshamn an hour south, to avoid navigating the skerries closer to Stockholm. Check which one you will end up at and I will recommend further transport. :)

The strange thing with the two options of disembarkation for Stockholm, Princess Cruises use both! On the smaller ship, Regal Princess, we were an hour away from the city but with the Star Princess (huge) we were in the Free Port.

So, which cruise line will you be with?

Travel Tips for Stockholm

Old Town at night

by jorgec25

Walking around Old Tow at night allows us to discover new perspectives of this fabulous part of Stockholm.

When all the shops and restaurants are closed, quietness is all around.

The only light in the small streets comes from beautiful old street lamps, and the light effects reveal unique details that cannot be seen during the day.

It's really a must see.

GAMLA STAN (Old Town)

GAMLA STAN (Old Town)

It is located on the tiny island of Riddarholmen, is the picturesque core of the 'Venice of the North'. The Old Town's main streets, Österlånggatan and Västerlånggatan, are pedestrianised and lined with shops but still you can feel an unspoilt medieval ambience coming from the strong colored buildings!

Explore Stockholm on foot. On...

Explore Stockholm on foot. On my walk around town, I came across Klara kyrka, the cathedral in the background. The statue in the foreground carrying the big clock is on a different building. I think it may have been a storefront.

UNESCO World Heritage

by tini58de

Sweden only has 14 UNESCO World Heritage sites, two of which are in Stockholm:

The Royal Domain of Drottningholm

and

The Woodland Cemetary - Skogskyrkogården

Both of the places are well worth visiting - we enjoyed them a lot (please read about it on my "ThingsTo Do Tips"!)

Shop till you Drop

by bottleofdoom

There are many good record & clothing stores. It can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you live in a small town like myself! I'll just talk about
the best of the crop. Unfortunately, the first day we were there turned out to be a Swedish holiday & all the stores were closed! But we figured out where everything was & how to get there. So we spent most of the day riding the train & getting aquainted with the city. Don in Gamla Stan. Gamla Stan means 'old town' & this is where Stockholm
originated back in the 12th Century.
