hotels - location

by cristiana04

hi,
please, according to you where is the best hotel in terms of location, restaurants, things to do and to see and transports:
Scandic Sjöfartshotellet
or Scandic Hasselbacken
or Scandic Continental???
thanks in advance,
regards,

Re: hotels - location

Well...none of them are bad locations but here are my comments:

Continental: smack bang in the city centre (really close to Old Town) and very close to the Central station if you need to carry luggage from the airport train/bus or plan to make daytrips. However, it's not the nicest area at night (as most station areas). Even if safe, it is quite seedy.

Hasselbacken: in the huge, green lung of Stockholm, close to the Skansen Open Air Museum and several other museums etc. a bit off the absolute nightlife but walking distance to the city and close to the waterfront. No underground nearby but there is a bus service if you're fed up of the nice walk.

Sjöfartshotellet: also in the middle of the city centre. Some rooms will have a harbour view (and some be obscured by the huge Coop building). Here you are within short walking distance to the Old Town but on the Söder island with its pubs and nightlife. Walk uphill to Fjällgatan for great photo opportunities of the water and islands. The Slussen underground station is just around the corner for when you need to go to the Central station (two stops) etc. and there are plenty of shuttle boats to take you across towards Djurgården (where Hasselbacken is).

Travel Tips for Stockholm

Stadshuset

by martin_nl

Go to Stadshuset (The City Hall), this is a beautiful building and make sure you take a guided tour to see all the rooms in it. The Golden Room is definately a must see!! Summertime tip: After your tour through Stadshuset place your towel somewhere in the 'backyard' of Stadshuset and enjoy the sun as well as the water. The temperature of the water can be very nice at the end of the summer, so go for a swim!

DUCK PRESS

DUCK PRESS

When I visited Stockholm in the early 80s' I found in one of the big department store NK or Åhlens this strange looking device in the kitchenware section!
Believe it or not (you better do) this is a duck press which costs $1400!

When visiting the City Hall,...

by Carla_Rocha

When visiting the City Hall, spend some time on the Gallery of
the Prince, the Council Chamber, the Blue Hall, where the annual Nobel Banquet
takes place, and on the Golden Hall. This one contains over 18.000.000!!!!
mosaic pieces made of glass and gold. You will also find some more information
concerning Birger Jarl, the founder of the city in 1252. Look at the City Hall
tower and you'll find the Three Crowns at top.

Stockholm Tip

STOCKHOLM'S PLAYGROUND
From Gamla Stan, it is just 10 minutes by boat across the harbour to the island of Djurgården, past the wharves where the big ferries leave for the Baltic, and Kastellholmen, now a military base.

Street Entertainers/Magicians

by sue_stone

We spent a lot of the time on our weekend in Stockholm wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere. One thing I noticed during our meanderings were the large number of street entertainers/magicians.

Perhaps the summer brings them all out, but I can't think of the last time I saw someone doing the whole "guess which one the coin is under" game.... which I saw a few times.

Also there was some good busker talent out there - a particularly entertaining saxophonist.

Carry some change with you in case you want to donate or take a gamble!
