Excellent location
by agustath
I spent much time surfing on the internet, asking friends etc. to find a suitable hotel in Stockholm. In the end, I booked the Scandic Sergel Plaza Hotel because of its excellent location and good prices. Then I found out that Icelanders frequently stay at this hotel in Stockholm. I wondered why, but found out as soon as we arrived. There are three H&M stores in a walking distance! I mean, THREE! And you know how we Icelanders love H&M!
Besides its great location (close to shopping streets, metro and Gamla Stan) it is still in a quiet street.
The breakfast is excellent, a huge buffet and even a small table with pancakes and other gourmet things for the kids. The picture on the right is from this fabulous kids buffet!
We tried the lunch buffett and the evening bar service and everything met our expectations.
The hotel has spa facilities, which were unfortunately closed, so we could not try it. But this is absolutely a nice feature in a hotel, when doing a city-break and walking much...
Unique Quality: The staff is tremendously friendly and helpful. They recommended restaurants for us, found out if museums were open (since we were travelling during Easter), booked a taxi etc.
We had been warned that hotel rooms in Sweden are smaller then usual, but our rooms were quite acceptable. We had three rooms, one twin room, one with a King bed and one with a Queen bed. The first two even had a small sofa and all of them had a bathtub + shower.

Scandic Sergel Plaza - Good Quality/Good location
by deptlads
The Scandic Sergel Plaza is a modern chain hotel right in the commercial centre of Stockholm. This hotel is great if you want easy access to the mains shops and department stores and the transport network, but are still only a short (5 minute) walk from the old town (Gamla Stan).
It is a fairly large, business/conference hotel, and looks pretty ordinary, but the rooms are a reasonable size, very comfortable, and nicely furnished & appointed (I think most have a bath) - good 4-star standard. There is not much atmosphere here, as they are really geared to handling conferences and tour groups, which they do very efficiently and in a way which avoids impacting too much on the individual guest. However, the location is really good. Just off Sergels Torg and the main shopping street. The metro (T-bana) is just around the corner, The central station is 5 minutes walk away (10 minutes for the airport express trains), and most of the main bus routes pass close by.
The other big plus point for this hotel is the price. Because it is a Scandic, you can often get really good deals, especially if you pay in advance. Our double room cost just SEK 1,008 a night, including breakfast. Which was actually quite a bit cheaper than most of the 3-star hotels we looked at for that weekend.
Recommended if you want comfort and a good central location at an affordable price.
Not recommended if you want a "romantic" stay with personal service.
Unique Quality: Good quality city centre hotel with an excellent location.
Good deals available at weekends and during the summer.
Directions: Directly off of Sergels Torg, behind Kulturhuset.

The usual block building

I always wonder if you can judge a hotel from the outside. What do you look for? Or do you go inside and ask to see a room?
Unique Quality: i can't mention any prices because my travel had a programme and everything was included in one price. I suggest you check the rates through the link that VT provides.

Sergel Plaza

Excellent hotel. Comfortable and right in the city center. Walking distance from central station, and from the city terminal (where the buses leave) and also from the new and old city.
You can find rates here
For 2008 the cheapest room is 115 euro.
Unique Quality: Different kinds of breakfasts including an intriguing Japanese breakfast! I didn't know how to eat it, or I would've tried.
Children stay for free, the website says.

Hotel chains in Sweden
by Maline
Scandic Hotels is a chain of hotels in both Sweden and other northern European countries. It is a member of the Hilton hotel group. There is a huge number of Scandic hotels in Sweden, often located near highways, of in the city centers. In Stockholm alone there are some six Scndic hotels. E.g Sergel Plaza in downtown Stockholm with doubles from around 200 euros/night of Malmen at Södermalm with dobles from around 120 euros per night. Check out www.scandic-hotels.se for more info.
Countryside hotels is a chain of some 30-odd hotels set in a more rustic environment, hence not in the city centers. They are often situated in old castles. Probably a great option for those seeking a romantic get away. Prices should start at about 100 euros/night per room. Website: www.countrysidehotels.com
Best Western hotel chain is widely known around the world and has a number of hotels in Sweden too. For example the hotel Riverton in Gothenburg is a Best western hotel with doubles from about 200 euros/night. Check out www.bestwestern.se for a complete list of hotels.
Before you decide to book online I have one final piece of advice for you, check out the online hotel booking and search website of Hotell Sverige
There is lots of info also in English. Good luck!!

Scandic hotels
by DallasBoiler
Hello,
I will be travelling to Stockholm this Summer and was wondering what the Scandic chain hotels were like. I have some Hilton points I can use for a free stay but I don't know anything about these hotels, particularly their Stockholm properties.
Thanks.

Hi,
The Scandic group have have some good hotels and some very good (Hilton standard). In general the hotels outside city centers are not the same high class as they in the city center, but still they have clean and good rooms and friendly staff.
In Stockholm city I can really recommend Scandic Slussen, Scandic Sergel Plaza and Scandic Continental. North of the city center in Upplands Väsby (half-way to Arlanda airport) you also have Hilton Stockholm Infra City wich is very good.
Scandic are the preferred hotels in the company I work for and I have spent over 100 nights the last 10 years at Scandic hotels.
You can get more information about Scandic at http://www.scandic-hotels.com.
Hope you will enjoy your stay!

Nothing really much to add to the previous poster. Both Sergel Plaza and Slussen hotels have excellent location with 1 minute walk distance from the Old Town.
