Travel Tips for Stockholm

Old Sweden is present not only in the architecture

by marielexoteria

If you ever take the subway and get off at the Rådhuset station, you will see some "boxes" sticking out of the walls (see my picture). These boxes, as I learnt, are a representation of an old volume measurement unit called parm. A parm unit was used to measure hay and would be the equivalent of 3 3/4 ells in length by 4 3/4 ells in width on each side and it's equivalent to 17.7 cubic meters on today's units.

There's a street in Stockholm called Parmmätargatan which points to a person that used to measure hay in parm.

Stockholms blodbad

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

On November, 8-9th 1520 on Stortorget - the main square of Stockholm there was a rough handling which received in history the name of "the Stockholm bloody bath" ("Stockholms blodbad").

It was time of Sweden struggle for independence and an exit from the Calmar union. The regent of Sweden Sten Sture - younger tried to resist to the Danish king Christian II. The Danish army intruded in Sweden and crushed the national army. By means of Catholic prelates there was staged a church court in the royal castle.

About 100 noblemen and townspeople were executed in Stockholm on obviously false charge in heresy. Their property was confiscated. According to contemporaries "blood streams flew down with Stortorget"... Similar bloody massacres occurred then in a number of Sweden areas.

STADSHUSET (City Hall - 1911)

Art Nouveau design by Ragnar Östberg. The interior of the CITY HALL has grand civic apartments, including the Golden Hall with its glass and gold mosaics.
You might remember from the annual Nobel Prize banquet the building's Blue Hall which is actually red!

Watch the statue of Nils Ferlin.

by Dizzyhead

This statue is of a Swedish writer and poet and it was founded in 1982 at the same place. Bejermark has done this statue of Nils Ferlin at Nils Ferlin Torg very close to Klara Kyrka. Here is Nils Ferlin standing and smoking a cigarr.
