History I
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
After the crowning in Uppsala in January, 1528 (it was the capital of Sweden at that moment) Gustav Vasa suppressed all the revolts incited by noblemen in the country and strengthened his royal authority after the long period of the Danish domination.
In 1549 he ordered to construct a new castle in Uppsala. The king wished that a castle stood opposite to the Cathedral. There was a tradition the king crowned in a cathedral should celebrate this event in his own castle.
In 1593 Lutheranism was recognized as the predominating dogma just in the castle of Uppsala.
The Tourist office
by Maline
The Tourist office is located on Fyristorg, street Sysslomansgatan in central Uppsala. From Central Square, walk down to the river, cross it and turn left walk a block, there it is. You can see it in the picture in the right corner. The exchance office is next door.
Student Nations
by marielexoteria
Nations are organizations for university students and some have been around since the 1600's. Their names are the names of the places where the nation students come from, and while they're not political organizations they run their own restaurants, disco nights, parties, sports/music/theater events, libraries, nation specific activities and help students find a place to live. These activities are carried out by the members of the nations.
Some nations were formed as far as the 1600's and their objective was to have a place where students from the same part of the country could meet and hang out with each other.
In Uppsala there are 13 active nations and for all university students it's mandatory to join one of them. Those who don't want to belong to any of these nations can join a fictive one called Skånelands nation, where they just pay the fee but then they don't have access to the events arranged by the other nations.
Something curious I've noticed: all the nations in Uppsala have their houses on the same side of the river (the west side) but Gotlands nation.

View of Uppsala
by cucumbre
The Uppsala Castle is located on a hill. Walk along the outer premise of the building to its back. You would get a bird eye view of part of the town. The tree may block the view. So stand on the benches if the view isn't good enough. I'm a short guy. It helped. ;)
