If you're the kind of person who prefer bathing without any clothes on there's a nudist section of the cliffs and beaches at Skutberget.
The nudist beaches are divided from the ordinary beaches by a hedge.
Nota bene! The free beaches have now been moved as they caused too much annoyance among "ordinary sunbathers". The free beaches are now located in a lake north of Molkom, some 40 km from the city centre. You'll need a car to go there.
Korpberget and Lompberget are two hills in the forest to the west of Karlstad, just by the River Nor and the small municipality of Vålberg. There are numerous remnants from the Bronze age and Iron age here, along a path about 5 km to the south of the E18 highway and just as long to the north. You will see several (10 or so) burial mounds from the bronze age, including one inside the ancient "castle" on Korpberget where you can still see the stone coffin.
On the north side there are also two burial mounds from the Iron age, possibly from the Viking era, along with yet another ancient "castle" (which is a large ring of collected stones).
This is a marvelous little excursion on a nice day, but bring shoes that you can climb the hilly passages with and which withstand the sometime wet paths. Also bring some coffee or tea and something to eat. Wanna have a snack with 3000 years of history around you?
Driving directions: Take the E18 to the east, drive PAST the road to Vålberg. Just before the big bridge over Nor's river there is a small parkinglot and a "sight"-sign. Park there and follow pathways. Bring CAMERA!
It was in 1584 that the Duke Karl issued city rights for the merchant place Tingvalla. The name of the new city was Karlstad and the duke became King Karl (Charles) IX in 1604.
The Statue of the Duke can be seen outside the residence of the Landshövding, on Järnvägsgatan, just east of the Square.
The monument itself depicts "C IX R.S" which is a latin abbreviation for Charles IX Rex Sveciae", Charles IX King of Sweden holding the bill with the city rights.
Is it really possible to bath right in the middle of a city?! Yes, here in Karlstad the Klar river floats peacefully by and on the grass by the theatre, a stone throw from the pubs and shopping people sun bath and bath all the summer. If you're the kind of person who would be ok with bathing here this is perfect.
And for those of you who prefer people watching; this is the spot for you too.
There are many other areas in the city where you can bath too, Sandgrundsudden (where the museum is) is centrally located, Gubbholmen is many 5-10 minutes by foot from the centre (by the stone bridge) and if you choose to stay at the Scandic hotel at Borgmästarholmen there is a perfectly shaped sand beach 20 metres from the hotel!
The bottom opf the river is mostly made up of sand so it's nice. Most parts of the river are very shallow; for instance today when I bathed at Borgmästarholmen I could have walked all across the river. Some parts are NOT shallow though and deep water may come quickly so take vare. And also: please remember that you're bathing in a river: currents may be strong cetrain times (although I've never experienced any current at all.
