Travel Tips for Karlstad

Fääärjestaaaad!

by Rojo72

Karlstad is a city of Hockey fans and Färjestad is the team!

Dress up in violet/lilac and yellow and head out along the river up to the district Färjestad where, right next to the river you will find the newly built (2002) Löfbergs Lila Arena where there are matches at least once or twice a week during the hockey season from the end of september to april.

Tickets are from about 130 SEK standing. The most expensive tickets are about 250 SEK.

And don't forget to join in on the chants from the standing crowds! "Lila-gult är dom bästa! Heja-heja, heja Färjestad!" Lilac and and yellow. Lilac OR yellow. Dress up in team colours and join in on the fun!

The lake and Forest

by elcolibri

The natural environment in and around Karlstad is flourishing and has a wealth of variety. To the north there are extensive coniferous forests. To the south, farming land stretches out to Lake Vanern and its 22.000 islands. The river Klaralven flows through the centre of Karlstad. It rises high in the Norwegian hills and forms an exciting delta as it empties into Lake Vanern. In order to protect the natural environment, the municipality operates environment stations and recycling centres where all recyclable and hazardous materials are taken care of.

Things you wouldn't expect to see...

by Rojo72

I didn't know where to put this tip so I finally decided for off the beaten path even though it's from the city centre.

When I was walking down Drottninggatan today I spotted these three street musicians and I had to stop and take a photo. Three elderly men playing Frank Sinatra songs in the middle of Karlstad, now that's something worth stopping for a few minutes for!

And here I was, thinking that it was only in Glasgow I got to listen to good street music (see tip in Glasgow page for that). Not that THESE three were as good as those in GG, but anyway!

Go biking on the NKIJ-track

by Rojo72

The NKIJ-track (Nordmark-Klarälvens järnväg) is an old railroad track that has now been changed into a bicycle/inline track paved with asphalt. The track goes from Karlstad to Hagfors, but today it's been paved to Munkfors (50-60 km north) and it is supposed to be paved in Hagfors this year (2005).

The track starts at Kroppkärrssjön in Karlstad It goes past very rural parts of southern Värmland and some very scenic lakes and the river Klar. There are resting places to stop and have a coffee along the way and you will also pass small municpalities like Forshaga, Deje, Olsäter and Munkfors

As it is an old railroad track it is very plain and when I biked the track two summers ago I had the best of times, I even saw an elk! When I went it was only finished up to Deje, north of that is out of my knowledge but I know it's equally scenic! Do remember to bring something to eat and drink and go in your own pace! Have fun!
