Karlstad Nightlife

by robofsherwood2007

I am visiting Karlstad in Sept and wondered where are the best bars and what I should expect to pay for a beer?

Hey,

Nice to read that you're coming to our beautiful city. Karlstad is a small place (about 80.000 inhabitants) but has quite a few places to go to on a weekend night. Which one you choose is a bit depending on your age and what you want to do.

Blue Moon Bar is a biiiig place down by the river. It has 2 different dance floors and several bars. The crowd is quite young but not the youngest, I'd say between 21-25 mostly.

Nöjesfabriken (The entertainment factory) is situated in what used to be a factory in the Herrhagen district, just next to the old canal. Ask your way there and you'll find it. It has 2 dancefloors and huge spaces. There is also a possibility to play bowling or golf simultaors here, or even to go go-carting. As far as the nightclub goes mostly young people go here...18-23's I'd guess (never been in a long while).

Harry's is the place where most "older" people go 25yrs and upwards. It has two floors and two different dancefloors on the top floor. There is a bar on each floor so you can just as easily use this place as a late night pub rather than a club if you want to. Harry's is at the north end of the Grand Square along with a bunch of other pubs, restaurants and clubs. The other clubs here tender for a young crowd.

There are a few good pubs with no dance-floors too. One is The Bishop's arms which is in the corner by the river in the Stadshotellet (The City Hotel), another one is Pitcher's which is just now moving up to the Square, when you get here you'll find it close to Harry's.

Have fun!

Roger

Travel Tips for Karlstad

Opening hours

by Rojo72

It could be a good idea to keep the opening hours on clubs and pubs in mind when planning a night on the town.

The pubs typically close at 1 AM and the clubs (which is all the places where there is a dance floor) at 2 AM. No clubs are open any later.

Bowling and Billiards at Score.

by Rojo72

This is an establishment on Kungsgatan, next door to the Ankan pub/nightclub and the "Blå" restaurant. They serve food during lunch hours and they also rent videos and DVDs but the main thing is that you can play pool and bowling here.

There are maybe 10-15 pool tables and 6 or 8 lanes for bowling. In the evening they turn on the disco lights in the bowling area and loud music and so on to get a more "hip" feel to it.

There is of course also a bar here!

Near the nice town of Degerfors there is a part of Tiveden's National Park that consists of a glacial forest. The rockformations here have stand the enormous pressure of the ice (kilometres thick) scrubbing over the land during the ice-age. Therefor the stone has been polished to a smooth, slippery surface.

See the house of the Godtemplars!

by Rojo72

The House of the Godtemplars in Karlstad is one of the most important places in Karlstad.

In the year 1905 the Union between Norway and Sweden was cracking up. The norwegiands demanded full independence and the swedish King Oscar II was reluctant to give up such a large part of his "Kingdom". There had been a norwegian government elected before the year 1905 and now a delegation from them were in Sweden to negotiate a way out of the union.

There was huge tension and the soliders had already lined up along the norwegian/swedish border when the two delegations reached a peaceful solution and Norway gained it's independence. The house of the GOdtemplars in Karlstad was where the treaty was negotiated and signed so it shouldn't be missed. You may not enter but you may of course watch it from the outside

The campus area

by Rojo72

The campus area is really nice these days. most students live in students apartments or in the neighbouring "Kronoparken" residential areas, and just opposite to the University and the Library is "Studenternas Hus", the house of the students, where there are study localities, a pub, training facilities, a shop etc etc. A nice place to hang out and cram!
