Gothenburg 3 days trip

by xqinlooi

Hi all,
I am from London. I am going to Gothenburg for 3 days (4 feb 2010 - 8 Feb 2010). Is there any winter activities over there?
we are interested on museums as well, any recommended?
What about public transport over there? Is there any pass for 3 days?
Thank you!

regarding public transportation, Göteborg has a very good tram and bus network, so it's easy to get around the city. However, most places can also be reached on foot.

A 1-day-ticket costs SEK 65, a 3-day-ticket SEK 130. It is valid within Göteborg on all buses, trams, local boats (crossing the harbour) and trains (except the X2000 express train).

If you plan to leave Göteborg and visit the neighbouring areas, you can also buy Göteborg+, ++, +++ and Regionen runt tickets for 1 or 3 days, which are also valid outside the city, within the Västra Götaland region.

This is the local transport company's website:

When we were there 2 years ago (in the summer), this is what we visited:
- Göteborgs-Utkiken, a high office tower, with a lookout platform on the top floor
- Universum, a large aquarium and science center, with a small rainforest within the building
- Maritiman, a ship-museum on water, where you can walk on the different ships, and even climb down to a submarine
- the Saluhallen (market hall) on Kungstorget square
- walk around the old town center

Though we haven't visited it, but for car fans there is also a Volvo Museum (a bit out of the city center).

If you plan to visit multiple sights, you can also buy a Göteborg Pass, which costs SEK 245 for 1 day, and SEK 340 for 3 days, and also includes public transport.

It might also be a good idea to visit an ice hockey match, which is very popular in Sweden.

On February 6, the local hockey team (Frölunda Indians) will play in the Scandinavium sports hall at 4pm.

It is possible to buy tickets online in advance, which you can then pick up when you arrive. Visit for booking.

Travel Tips for Göteborg

Where to buy the ticket for the football game

by Calcio

Hardly any games, except maybe for the IFK Göteborg-Örgryte derby is sold out. But there could be important game, specially for IFK Göteborg, at the end of the season, and then Gamla Ullevi might be sold out.
Tickets you can buy in advance at the supporter-shop at Berzeligatan, the ticket office at Scandinavium, Ullevi or via internet

Same for Örgryte, except for the supportershop.

Gais, Häcken and Frölunda? Just go to the stadium, it’s never sold out.

Street design

by diocletianvs

Göteborg puts a lot of effort into design of street pavements. They are usually various stones, with longitudinal stripes of stone as a landmark (very useful if you're pulling a bag or a suitcase on wheels :).
Pedestrian areas and bicycle lanes are carefully designed and bordered. Almost always street pavement is continous while asphalt of side-streets stops there, marking the area where cars are allowed to cross but are not generally wellcome - the priority is given to pedestrians.

Money: Swedish Crown

Although Sweden is a member of the the European Union (EU) since 1995, they don't have the Euro as currency. Sweden's currency is the Swedish Crown. 1 Swedish Crown is worth 100 Öre.
You can get your money with your credit or debit card from cash points or just by exchanging your local money at one of the Exchange Centers. These can be found at many locations all around the town, e.g. at the Central Railway Station or the Airport Terminals.

Packing List

by Guiden

Anything that is not dependent on a smooth ground, here they love to put holes in the ground or pave them with stones... Do not forget your rain coat! Take a tent, then you'll never be out of room. It's free to camp in the forests around the city.

Lovely islands, nice evening trip

by djepie

A tram tour (nr.11) of about 45 minutes from the city centre (Brunnspark / Central Station) of Göteborg brings you to the Saltholmen harbour. The normal bus/tram ticket can also be used on the boat for just a few euros. When having a Göteborg pass, it's free. You can even buy a ticket by sms. I took a trip to the most departed island, Vrangö, a 45 minutes trip.

This trip can be made on an evening. I left the city centre at 18:30 by tram, took the ferry at 19:30, spend one hour and a half at the island (no restaurants or cafes open!), took the boat of 21:41, the tram of 22:43 and was back in the city centre around 23:30.

See my Vrangö travel page!
